SAU Rally Falls Short In Homecoming Football Loss

RALEIGH, N.C. (Oct. 20) – Saint Augustine's University nearly rallied from a 17-point deficit in a 31-28 football loss to Fayetteville State University on Homecoming Day at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Saturday.

The loss knocked the Falcons out of contention for the CIAA Southern Division title. Their division record is 2-2 while the Broncos improved to 4-0 with two games left in the regular season. Both Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State University (3-1) own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Falcons.

The Falcons made the contest interesting, however. They scored 14 points off two turnovers in a one-minute span to get within 24-21 at halftime after trailing 24-7 in the second quarter.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Broncos increased their lead to 31-21 on a 64-yard pass, but the Falcons cut the margin again on a five-yard pass from John Darby IV (Fr./Detroit, MI) to Lenwood Joyner (Sr./Miami, FL). Sean Smith (Sr./Valdosta, GA) booted the extra point to pull the Falcons within 31-28 with 10:25 remaining.

The Falcons gained possession twice after the touchdown but their first drive ended in a punt and the second drive ended on downs at their 48-yard line with 1:39 left. The Broncos made two first downs and ran out the clock for the win.

The loss ruined a nice comeback by the Falcons, who trailed 10-0 in the first quarter. Darby put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a 21-yard run and Smith kicked the extra point to slice the deficit to 10-7.

The Broncos stretched their lead on two big plays. After Darby's touchdown, the Falcons gave up a 95-yard kickoff return in the first quarter and a 50-yard fumble return in the second quarter for scores. Trailing 24-7, the Falcons relied on their defense to climb back in the game.

Falcons' defensive back Teyon Davis (Fr./Landover, MD) stopped a potential Bronco scoring drive with an interception near the Falcons' goal line. The Falcons capitalized by marching 72 yards in three plays capped by a five-yard touchdown run by Antavius Marrow (So./Raleigh, NC). The key play was a 62-yard pass from Darby to Anthony Berry, Jr. (Fr./Kinston, NC). The score was 24-14 after Smith's extra point with 1:16 remaining in the second quarter.

On the ensuing series, Falcons' linebacker Dante Robinson (Jr./Valdosta, GA) recovered a fumble at the FSU 30-yard line which led to a 15-yard touchdown pass from Darby to Berry on the last play before halftime.

Smith's extra point pulled the Falcons within 24-21 at the half. Neither team would score again until the frantic fourth quarter.

Darby finished with two touchdown passes and one scoring run for the Falcons (2-5 overall). Berry caught two passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive back DeVaughn Taylor (Sr./Washington, DC) collected 10 tackles for the Falcons. Linebacker Joseph Harris, Jr. (Fr./Jacksonville, FL) had three tackles for loss as the Falcons limited the Broncos' high-powered offense to 17 points. They held All-CIAA running back Stevie Green to 57 yards.

Donshel Jetton led the Broncos (5-1 overall) with 88 rushing yards. Collyn Anderson scored on a 15-yard run and connected with Bruce Davis on the 64-yard score. Defensive end Keyshawn James and defensive lineman Quran Blount each had seven tackles for the Broncos. James tallied four tackles for loss including two sacks.

The Falcons travel to Charlotte, N.C., next Saturday, Oct. 27, for a CIAA divisional clash against Johnson C. Smith University. Game time is 1 p.m.
