SAU Late Rally Falls Short Against Bowie State In Football Home Opener

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 22) – John Darby IV (Fr./Detroit, MI) threw one touchdown pass and ran for another as Saint Augustine's University nearly rallied from a huge deficit late before falling 32-22 to Bowie State University on Saturday at the George Williams Athletic Complex.

The contest was the home football opener and first CIAA game for the Falcons, who trailed 32-7 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Falcons scored 15 unanswered points and had possession with 1:04 left after defensive back Curtis Hardy (Jr./Washington, DC) forced a fumble that linebacker Joseph Harris, Jr. (Fr./Jacksonville, FL) recovered.

The Falcons (0-1 CIAA, 0-3 overall) fumbled on the next play, ending the comeback. The Bulldogs (1-0 CIAA, 3-1 overall) ran out the time to win the game.

Darby finished 8 of 16 for 82 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Falcons. His favorite target was Lenwood Joyner (Sr./Miami, FL), who caught five passes for 67 yards including a 45-yard score which put the Falcons ahead 7-6 in the first quarter.

Jeremiah Miller (Jr./Miami, FL) led the Falcons on the ground with 92 yards on 23 carries. It was his one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that sparked the Falcons' rally. The extra point by Sean Smith (Sr./Valdosta, GA) pulled the Falcons within 32-14. A 15-yard run by Darby and a 14-yard pass from Darby to Joyner at the Bulldogs' 1 set up the score.

On the following series, Sidney Lawson (So./Charlotte, NC) picked off a pass near midfield and rambled 44 yards to the Bowie State four-yard line. The Falcons took advantage of the turnover when Darby scooted in the end zone from the Bulldogs' nine. The Falcons made it a 10-point game after Darby found Larry Blanks (Jr./Dunn, NC) for the two-point conversion.

It appeared the Falcons would make the game really interesting after recovering the onside kick. But an official ruled the Falcons touched the ball before it went the mandatory 10 yards, much to the chagrin of the team and the SAU fans who disagreed.

The Bulldogs gained possession but fumbled three plays later on the Falcons' 39. However, the Falcons could not capitalize as they fumbled with just under a minute remaining.

Linebacker Dante Robinson (Jr./Valdosta, GA) recorded a game-high eight tackles for the Falcons, who forced three turnovers and held the Bulldogs to 34 rushing yards. Defensive back Roy Garris, Jr. (Jr./Raleigh, NC) added seven tackles while Hardy and Harris each tallied six tackles. Defensive linemen Keywan Morgan (Sr./LaGrange, NC) and Brandon Jackson (Fr./Washington, DC) each had a sack.

For Bowie State, Amir Hall completed 28 of 42 passes for 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. The nation's second-ranked passer in yards per game, Hall tossed two scoring throws during a 20-point second quarter which put the Bulldogs ahead 26-7 at halftime.

Gilbert Lunsford finished with eight receptions for 125 yards and a score, and Montez Clay added eight catches for 95 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs. Defensive back Roger Richardson led the Bulldogs with seven tackles.

Next Saturday, the Falcons hit the road for a conference game against Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
