RALEIGH, N.C. (Nov. 9) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) led twice in the second half after falling behind early but eventually fell 24-21 to crosstown rival Shaw University in the Raleigh Classic football game at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Saturday.
The Falcons overcame a 10-0 first-half deficit to take their second lead of the game at 21-17 with 10:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. D'Ontre Gilliard (Fr./Holly Hill, SC) hooked up with Anthony Berry (So./Kinston, NC) on a 20-yard touchdown pass and Andre Labat (Fr./Miami, FL) booted one of his three extra points to put the Falcons ahead.
Shaw responded with a two-yard touchdown pass and extra point for a 24-21 lead with 4:48 remaining. The Falcons moved to the Shaw 42-yard line on their final drive, but they gave up a sack on fourth down and six with 1:17 left. The Bears ran out the clock to keep the Raleigh Classic Trophy for the second straight year.
Gilliard and Berry of SAU connected for three touchdowns in the game, including a 29-yarder to get the Falcons within 10-7 right before halftime. The duo struck again in the third quarter for a 14-yard scoring pass to give the Falcons their first lead at 14-10.
The Bears (5-2 Southern Division, 6-4 overall) regained the lead at 17-14 early in the fourth quarter, but the Falcons scored on the next possession, courtesy of Gilliard's 20-yard pass to Berry. The touchdown set the stage for the final moments.
The Falcons (2-5 Southern Division, 2-8 overall) gave a valiant effort in the loss. Gilliard completed 23 of 42 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns but also threw three interceptions and was sacked three times. Berry caught 10 passes for 117 yards and three touchdowns, and Aakiel Greer (Jr./Kosciusko, MS) added four receptions for 77 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Durrell Nash (Sr./Chicago, IL) totaled a game-high 14 tackles and Booker Peake (Fr./Goose Creek, SC) added 13 tackles for the Falcons, who forced four turnovers and recorded five sacks. Defensive linemen Teoz Mauney (Sr./Salisbury, NC) and Desmond Quinerly (Jr./Raleigh, NC) each added nine tackles.
For Shaw, Torrin Campbell completed 15 of 22 passes for 294 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, which Shymere Scott (So./Kannapolis, NC) returned on a long run deep in Bears' territory in the second half. The Falcons sacked Campbell five times.
Sidney Gibbs rushed 28 times for 131 yards and Marquis Gorham grabbed three passes for 175 yards and one touchdown. Kevonta Moses had five receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
