SAU Softball Sweeps Livingstone On Senior Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 18) – The Saint Augustine's University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep of Livingstone College at Lions Park on Thursday.

The Lady Falcons took care of the Lady Blue Bears 8-0 in the first game and 11-3 in the second game of their final home doubleheader this season. Both contests ended in five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Between games, the team honored All-CIAA infielder Haley Sessoms (Kenansville, NC), who is graduating in May. Sessoms is a junior on the field but a senior in the classroom.

Overall, it was a festive day for the Lady Falcons, whose four-game win streak this week is the longest this season. On Tuesday, they swept archrival Shaw University at Lions Park.

The wins put the Lady Falcons in position to challenge for a CIAA Championship Tournament berth. The tournament is set for April 29-May 1 in Salem, Va.

The Lady Falcons are fourth in the Southern Division with a showdown looming Monday, April 22, against fifth-place Fayetteville State University. SAU (4-4 Southern Division) holds a two-game lead over FSU (2-6 Southern Division) for the division's final spot.

On Thursday, the Lady Falcons batted with authority and got solid pitching from All-American Makayla August (Jr./Palm Springs, CA), who won both games. Gia Minnis (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) provided several big hits for the Lady Falcons, who pounded out 18 hits in the doubleheader including eight for extra bases.

The biggest hit for Minnis was an inside-the-park home run that sparked a five-run spurt in the second inning of the first game. Briana Person (Fr./Jarratt, VA) added an RBI double and Sessoms smacked a two-run double before scoring on a passed ball for a 6-0 lead.

Minnis ended the game in the fifth with an RBI double for the eight-run win. She finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, double, two RBIs and one run scored for the Lady Falcons, who collected 11 hits.

Person was also 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. Chandra Mackey (So./Nassau, Bahamas) was 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored.

August flirted with a no-hitter through three innings before finishing with a two-hit shutout. She had six strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

After their first-game victory, the Lady Falcons recognized Sessoms, a shortstop and third baseman, for her softball achievements at SAU. A 2017 All-CIAA Rookie selection and 2018 All-CIAA pick, Sessoms helped the Lady Falcons capture the CIAA Southern Division title last year.

Escorted by her parents Bronzie and Kimberly, Sessoms walked from home plate to the pitcher's mound where teammates showered her with presents and adoration. She posed for photos with her parents, Head Coach Dot Neal and the team.

After the ceremony, Sessoms hit a two-run double in the second inning to stretch the Lady Falcons' lead to 5-0. She fittingly capped Senior Day with a two-run double in the fifth that stopped the game. Teammates chanted "Ha-Ley, Ha-Ley" in the dugout before her hit.

Sessoms led the Lady Falcons with four RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting including two doubles in the second game. She also scored two runs.

August was 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Falcons, who had seven hits. She tossed a two-hitter in three innings with two strikeouts, zero walks and one run allowed. Sessoms finished off the Lady Blue Bears with a two-hitter, one strikeout and two runs allowed in two innings.

For Livingstone (0-10 Southern Division, 0-24 overall), Jamie Tolkkinen drove in two runs and Alexus Franklin scored twice in the second game. Rebecca Brown took the pitching loss in both games.

The doubleheader between SAU (5-15 overall) and FSU will be at
Lamon Street Park in Fayetteville, N.C., on Monday. Game times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m.
