RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 14) – Quarterback Jalen Jones (Sr./Baltimore, MD) threw a touchdown pass and tailback Jeremiah Miller (Sr./Miami, FL) scored on the ground for Saint Augustine's University (SAU) in a 46-14 non-conference football loss to Mars Hill University at Meares Stadium in Mars Hill, N.C., on Saturday.
Their touchdowns pulled the Falcons even at 14-14 in the second quarter after trailing 14-0. The Lions scored the remaining points for the final score.
Turnovers set up both SAU scores. Desmond Quinerly (Sr./Raleigh, NC) pounced on a fumble at the SAU 27 to thwart a Lions' scoring drive in the first quarter. The Falcons then embarked on a 15-play, 73-yard drive capped by Jones' nine-yard scoring pass to Joe Baker (So./Goldsboro, NC) in the second quarter. The Falcons maintained possession on the drive for 7:46.
Later in the second quarter, Teyon Davis (So./Landover, MD) picked off a pass and sprinted 27 yards to the Mars Hill 3. On the next play, Miller scored on a short run. Andre Labat (Fr./Miami, FL) kicked his second extra point to tie the score.
Quinerly led an SAU defense that forced four turnovers on a rainy day. He recovered two fumbles.
But the Falcons (0-2 overall) lost the ball three times including an interception, which led to an early Mars Hill score for a 7-0 lead.
Both teams were flagged heavily, combining for 27 penalties. The Falcons committed 14 infractions and the Lions (1-1 overall) were penalized 13 times.
Next Saturday, Sept. 21, the Falcons host CIAA foe Virginia State University in their home opener at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
