SAU Football Scares Chowan Early In CIAA Opening Loss

RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 25) – Saint Augustine's University gave unbeaten Chowan University an early scare before falling 59-12 in the CIAA football opener for both teams Saturday at the George Williams Athletic Complex.

The Hawks shot out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead, but it wasn't long before the Falcons electrified the Homecoming crowd. D'Ontre Gilliard (So./Holly Hill, SC) found Deandre Proctor (Fr./Elizabeth City, NC) on a short pass, and Proctor did the rest. He outraced the Hawks defense to the end zone for a thrilling 92-yard score which pulled the Falcons within 14-6.

The excitement continued for the Falcons and their fans on the next series. Jerron Hinton (Fr./Elizabeth City, NC) intercepted a pass near the SAU goal line and ran 45 yards to midfield.

The drive stalled but the Falcons (0-2 overall, 0-1 CIAA) caught a break when the Hawks fumbled a punt in the end zone and Joseph Harris (Jr./Jacksonville, FL) fell on the ball for a touchdown. Suddenly, the Falcons were back in the game, trailing 14-12 in the first quarter.

Unfortunately, the Falcons failed to score again as the Hawks (4-0 overall, CIAA 1-0) pulled away to remain unbeaten.

Wide receiver Aakiel Greer (Sr./Kosciusko, MS) caught three passes for 52 yards and defensive end Demetrius Johnson (Sr./Baltimore, MD) tallied a game-high 12 tackles for the Falcons.

Quarterback Bryce Witt accounted for eight touchdowns (four passing, four running) to lead Chowan.

After opening the season with two home games, the Falcons hit the road for three consecutive road contests beginning with Virginia State University on Oct. 2. Game time is 6 p.m. at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Va.
