SAU Softball Bounces Back To Top Johnson C. Smith In Second Game

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 8) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) bounced back from an earlier loss to defeat Johnson C. Smith 9-6 in the second game of a CIAA softball doubleheader at Oakwood Park on Friday.

The victory was the first this season for the Lady Falcons, who lost 9-0 in the first game.

SAU set season highs in runs, hits (12) and RBIs (8) against the Golden Bulls. Victoria Spoon (So./Holland Patent, NY) and Gia Minnis (Graduate/Nassau, Bahamas) each knocked in two runs and Shaquelle Bain (Sr./Nassau, Bahamas) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Jada Swafford (Fr./Alexandria, VA) scored two runs and Madison Poston (So./Florence, SC) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored.

Poston regrouped from a first-game pitching loss to earn the win on the mound. She allowed only two runs after entering the game in the third inning and the Lady Falcons holding a 5-4 lead. The SAU pitcher scattered three hits and recorded three strikeouts with no walks in five innings.

The Lady Falcons (1-9 CIAA, 1-19 overall) scored four runs in the fifth inning to increase a one-run lead. Minnis slapped a two-run triple and Deanta' Colebrooke (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) added an RBI single. Yasmine Thompson (Sr./Charlotte, NC) finished the scoring in the inning with an RBI single for a 9-4 lead. The Golden Bulls (3-5 CIAA, 4-9 overall) collected two runs in the seventh inning for the final score.

The Golden Bulls took an early 2-0 lead but the Lady Falcons moved ahead 4-2 in the bottom half of the first inning. Spoon smacked an RBI double and later scored on a passed ball. Poston hit a one-run single and Rashonda Hart (Fr./Nassau, Bahamas) had an RBI groundout.

JCSU tied the score 4-4 in the second inning, but the Lady Falcons regained the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by Spoon in the bottom half of the inning.

Poston kept the Golden Bulls at bay while the Lady Falcons padded their lead.

The Lady Falcons play again Saturday, April 9, against Livingstone in another CIAA doubleheader at Oakwood. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
