DURHAM, N.C. (May 6) – Saint Augustine's University (SAU) took a major step towards its return to CIAA dominance in women's outdoor track and field on Saturday.
The Lady Falcons earned 77.13 points to place third at the CIAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Championships held at Durham County Stadium. Meanwhile, the men's team placed second in their division.
The third place finish returned the Lady Falcons back to the podium for the first time since 2018 under the leadership of first-year women's head track & field coach Elizabeth Gary. On Saturday, athletes
Malaysia Johnson (Fr./Fort Lauderdale, FL) and
Sean Kalawan (Jr./Westmoreland, Jamaica) also received their CIAA Track Athlete of the Year Awards. The award is the third in the Kalawan household, where Sean's sister, Lady Falcons standout
Shannon Kalawan was a two-time recipient from 2018-2019.
SAU finished first in two of 14 events. Johnson won the Women's 400 Meters and
Abijah Jepkemboi (Fr./Kapsabet, Kenya) won the Women's 3000 Meters. The full results are on tfrrs.org and saintaugfalcons.com.
