Falcons Sweep ECSU For Record-Setting 27 Victories

CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College topped Elizabeth City State University 9-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second game Wednesday in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex to set a modern single-season school milestone with 27 wins.

The victories are the most for the Falcons (27-12 overall) since at least 1976 when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) kept track of the program's statistics. The 27 wins topped the 26 wins by the Falcons in 2009 when they reached the CIAA Tournament finals for the second straight year.

The Falcons also remained unbeaten in the CIAA at 12-0. They currently lead the conference standings.

Ryan Wood (Jr./Chester, Va.) hurled a four-hitter in the first game, and Chris Vette (Jr./Hampton, Va.) threw a four-hitter in the second game for the Falcons. Joe Pierce (Jr./Wetumpka, Ala.) went 3-for-6 combined with a home run, double and two RBIs; Chris Rogers (Fr./Chicago, Ill.) went 5-for-7 with a triple, double, three runs and an RBI; and Rashad Ingram (Jr./Savannah, Ga.) went 2-for-6 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Falcons' batters.

The Falcons pounded out 11 hits in the first game including a three-run homer over the left field wall by Ariel Polancio (Fr./Harlem, N.Y.). Rogers went 4-for-4 in that game.

In the second game, the Falcons took advantage of three errors by the Vikings (4-9 CIAA, 10-13 overall) in the bottom of the sixth inning to score three runs and break open a 1-1 tie.

Kermit Jackson went 3-for-6 with two RBIs combined for the Vikings. The Falcons swept the season series 4-0 against the Vikings.

The Falcons play again Saturday at Chowan University in a CIAA doubleheader in Murfreesboro, N.C. Game time for the first contest is 1 p.m.
