AUGUSTA, Ga. – Saint Augustine's College lost 8-4 to Paine College, but the Falcons recovered to take the second game 12-5 Wednesday, March 15, 2012 in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Lion Field.
The Falcons head into their much anticipated showdown against defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State this weekend with an 8-19 mark including a 2-1 CIAA record. The Falcons and Rams, who met in the finals of the CIAA Baseball Championships last year, play a four-game series starting with Saturday's doubleheader in Winston-Salem, N.C., at 1 p.m.
The Falcons fell behind 8-0 in the first game Wednesday before scoring three runs in the fifth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Alex Howard (Sr./Wilson, N.C.) and a two-run error committed by Paine (8-11 overall). The Falcons added another run on a Paine error in the sixth.
The Falcons found their hitting stroke after scratching out four hits in the first game. They amassed 12 hits in the second game to pull away from Paine. Howard led the way with four RBI on 2-for-3 hitting.
David Nelson (Jr./Richton Park, Ill.) and
Joshua Easter (Soph./Chicago, Ill.) both added two RBI.
The Falcons led 3-2 in the second inning on two bases loaded walks and an RBI groundout by
Wayne Lewis (Sr./Charlotte, N.C.). Howard doubled in two runs for a 5-2 lead in the third, and added another two-run double during a six-run fourth inning. Nelson also added a two-RBI double and Easter hit an RBI single in the sixth as the Falcons opened an 11-4 lead. The Falcons tacked on their final run in the fifth when
Anthony Holloway (Sr./New Bern, N.C.) singled to drive in
Daveed Todd (Jr./Chicago, Ill.), who reached base on a triple.
Alex Edwards (Soph./Chicago, Ill.) pitched seven innings for a complete game. He scattered five hits for the win.
