WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College lost 2-1 and 15-1 to Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at BB&T Ballpark in a rematch of last year's finals of the CIAA Baseball Championships.
The losses dropped the Falcons to 8-21 overall and 2-3 in the CIAA. The Rams, the defending CIAA champs, improved to 18-14 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
The first game was a low-scoring affair as the Rams led 2-0 heading to the top of the seventh.
David Nelson (Jr./Richton Park, Ill.) pulled the Falcons within one run on an RBI groundout. The Falcons were in position to score more runs, but a ground out ended the game with men on second and third.
John Hailey took the loss despite holding the Rams to six hits and two runs in six innings.
Sterling James (Fr./New Castle, Del.) had two of the Falcons' five hits on two at-bats.
Wayne Lewis (Sr./Charlotte, N.C.) tripled while Nelson and
Daveed Todd (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) both doubled in the first game.
The Falcons scored the first run of the second game on an RBI ground out by
Pat Hall (Jr./Virginia Beach, Va.). The ground out proved to be the biggest highlight for the Falcons.
The Rams tied the score in the first inning, and tacked on four runs in the second for a 5-1 lead. By the sixth inning, the score was 9-1 and the Rams were not through yet. They scored six runs in the sixth for the final score.
Todd went 2-for-2 at the plate for the Falcons, who managed five hits. Meanwhile, the Rams collected 15 hits.
Clarence Ganus (Jr./Whiteville, N.C.) was credited with the loss.
Both teams played another doubleheader Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. The first pitch was scheduled for 1 p.m.
