MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College cranked out 11 hits against nationally-ranked Mount Olive College in a 15-6 baseball loss Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Scarborough Field.
The Falcons appear to be finding their hitting groove after struggling at the plate most of the season. They reached double figures in hits for only the eighth time this season, but have done it twice the last two games.
Ariel Polanco (Jr./Harlem, N.Y.) and
Anthony Holloway (Sr./New Bern, N.C.) led the way for the Falcons on offense. They combined for six hits with Polanco going 3-for-5 with two RBI and Holloway 3-for-4 with one run batted in.
The Falcons, however, allowed 14 hits in the nine-inning non-conference loss. This is the 21
st time this season that an opponent has tallied 10 or more hits.
The Trojans led 6-0 in the first inning to put the Falcons in a hole early. The score was 12-0 before the Falcons finally came to life offensively in the eighth inning. Polanco put the Falcons on the scoreboard with a one-run single and Holloway later added another RBI single. Both players scored on an error and
Ben Hatchell (Soph./Matthews, N.C.) singled in a run to cap a five-run inning.
The Trojans extended their lead to 15-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Falcons added one more run in the ninth on Polanco's RBI groundout.
The loss dropped the Falcons' record to 10-24. The Trojans, No. 11 in the Collegiate Baseball Rankings, won their 13
th straight game to improve to 24-6. The Falcons return to conference action Wednesday, March 28, 2012 against Shaw University. The CIAA doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. at Buffaloe Road Park.
