Baseball Team Sweeps ECSU, Qualifies For CIAA Tournament

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College swept Elizabeth City State University 8-4 and 15-2 on Saturday, April 14, 2012, in a CIAA baseball doubleheader to secure a spot in next week's CIAA Tournament.
 
The Falcons, 9-8 in the CIAA standings, take on the Vikings Sunday in the regular season finale at noon in Elizabeth City, N.C. The league tournament starts Thursday in Petersburg, Va.
 
The Falcons pounded out 27 hits combined in two games. Jeremy Wilkins (Jr./Smithfield, N.C.) continued his torrid hitting by going 4-for-6 with three RBI and one home run against the Vikings. He was 6-for-6 with five RBI against Virginia-Lynchburg in a doubleheader on Monday.
 
Sterling James (Fr./New Castle, Del.) was 5-for-6 with one RBI, and Ariel Polanco (Jr./Harlem, N.Y.) was 4-for-8 with three RBI and two doubles. Daveed Todd (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) was 4-for-8 with three RBI and one double.
 
The Falcons hammered out 13 hits in the first game. James was 3-for-3 while David Nelson (Jr./Richton Park, Ill.) was 2-for-3, Wilkins was 2-for-3 with a home run and Polanco was 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Howard (Sr./Wilson, N.C.) and Pat Hall (Jr./Virginia Beach, Va.) each drove in two runs while Calvin Butcher (Soph./New Castle, Del.), Polanco, Todd and Wilkins each added an RBI. Hall also homered in the first game.
 
Wilkins led the Falcons with three runs scored. Five other Falcons each scored a run including Polanco, Hall, Nelson, Howard and James.
 
John Hailey (Jr./Rockingham, N.C.) scattered nine hits in seven innings for the win. He struck out six batters and walked none.
 
The Falcons led 3-0 early but the Vikings tied the game in the fourth inning.  The score was 4-4 when the Falcons scored three runs in the sixth inning and added a score in the seventh inning for the victory.
 
The Falcons continued their offensive outburst in the second game, amassing 14 hits. Wilkins was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Todd was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Polanco was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, and James was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
 
Wayne Lewis (Sr./Charlotte, N.C.) and Ben Hatchell (Soph./Matthews, N.C.) each added an RBI. Polanco scored three runs while Butcher, Lewis and Todd each added two runs. Six other Falcons each scored one run including Luis Perez (Fr./Hampton, Va.), Anthony Holloway (Sr./New Bern, N.C.), Wilkins, Hall, James and Darren Burks (Soph./Springfield, Ill.).
 
The Falcons opened an 11-1 lead after fourth innings to put the Vikings away. They added four runs in the sixth inning.
 
Alex Di Dio (Sr./Newport News, Va.) fired a three-hitter in seven innings for the win. He recorded 11 strikeouts and walked two.
 
The Falcons are now 18-29 overall for the season. The Vikings are 5-23 overall and 3-14 in the CIAA.
