Eighth Inning Hurts Baseball Team In Loss to No. 30 UNCP

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College only trailed by two runs against the nation's 30th ranked Division II team, but UNC Pembroke exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Falcons 14-4 on Tuesday evening, April 3, 2012 in a non-conference baseball game at Sammy Cox Field.

Alex Howard (Sr./Wilson, N.C.) drove in two runs while Daveed Todd (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) and Sterling James (Fr./New Castle, Del.) each added an RBI for the Falcons, who had 10 hits. They helped the Falcons come back from a 4-0 deficit.

James put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly. The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the inning for a 5-1 lead, but the Falcons responded with two runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Howard and Todd. The Falcons scored again in the eighth on Howard's RBI off a fielder's choice to close within 6-4.

The Falcons were gaining momentum, but the Braves put the game out of reach with their big inning in the bottom half of the eighth. The Braves had five of their 15 hits in the eighth.

The Falcons dropped to 14-26 overall while the Braves upped their record to 25-12. The Falcons return to CIAA action in a three-game series against Chowan University this weekend. Both teams play a doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park in Raleigh, N.C., at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
