Todd Bright Spot for Baseball Team In Losses To Chowan

Game 1

Game 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Daveed Todd (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) provided the offensive firepower for Saint Augustine's College in doubleheader losses to Chowan University on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Buffaloe Road Park. The Falcons were defeated 5-3 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game on Senior Day.

Todd knocked in four of the Falcons' five runs. He was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a home run in the first contest. In the second game, Todd did not record a hit but drove in two runs on a sacrifice fly and a groundout.

His solo home run in the first game was the biggest highlight of the day. He blasted a shot over the left field fence for his third homer of the season. The homer breathed life into the Falcons, who cut Chowan's lead to 4-1 after the Hawks scored four runs in the first inning.

The Falcons clawed back into the game in the sixth inning. Ariel Polanco (Jr./Harlem, N.Y.) smacked an RBI single and Todd pushed a run across the plate on a fly out to right field. Trailing 4-3, the Falcons were one run away from a tie with one inning left.

The Hawks, who hadn't scored since the first inning, added a critical run in the seventh. Needing two runs to force extra innings, the Falcons placed men on first and second with two outs but the Hawks forced a pop out for the win.

Calvin Butcher (Soph./New Castle, Del.) finished 3-for-4 for the Falcons. After a shaky start, John Hailey (Jr./Rockingham, N.C.) settled down and scattered eight hits in seven full innings. He gave up three hits in the first inning, but allowed five hits the rest of the way. Hailey had six strikeouts and one walk.

The Falcons faced another uphill climb in the second game after falling behind 3-0. Once again, Todd ignited the Falcons with a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the third inning. He grounded out in the fifth inning but it scored another run to close the deficit to 3-2.

Once again, the Hawks responded in the seventh inning. This time, they scored twice for a three-run lead. It held up as the Hawks retired the side during the Falcons' at-bat to gain the sweep. Alex Di Dio (Sr./Newport News, Va.) took the loss for the Falcons, allowing only three earned runs in a complete game.

The losses failed to put a damper on Senior Day. Four seniors were honored between games including Anthony Holloway (New Bern, N.C.), Alex Howard (Wilson, N.C.), Wayne Lewis (Charlotte, N.C.) and Di Dio.

The Falcons host Coker College next Thursday in a nine-inning game at USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. Game time is 3 p.m.
