St. Aug Upends East Stroudsburg 11-6 In Nine-Inning Baseball Game

Box Score Boxscore

CARY, N.C. – The trio of Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.), Ricky Martin (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.) and Jason Baytop (Fr./Laurel, Md.) each drove in two runs apiece to lift Saint Augustine's University to an 11-6 victory over East Stroudsburg University in a nine-inning game at USA Baseball Complex on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013.

The Falcons (4-3 overall) took two of three games from the Warriors (1-2 overall) in the weekend series. The wins over a program from the highly regarded Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) is a huge step in the right direction for the Falcons. Before this weekend, the Falcons were 0-6 over a two-year span against the Warriors and the results were mostly lopsided.

“We are coming along as a team,” said St. Aug Head Coach Charles Whitaker, whose Falcons had 11 hits. “We are starting to look good. If we continue to play like this, we will be fine.”

The threesome of Scott, Martin and Baytop all contributed at the plate. Baytop smacked a two-run single and Scott doubled in a run to spark a four-run fifth inning which gave the Falcons a 10-2 lead. Martin hit a one-run triple in the seventh inning for the final margin after the Warriors rallied to cut the score to 10-6 in the same inning.

Martin went 2-for-4 with a double and triple to lead the Falcons. In addition to his two RBIs, Martin scored one run. Scott was 1-for-4 with a double and Baytop was 1-for-4 with a single. Both players scored one run apiece.

Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) and Sterling James (So./New Castle, Del.) also made their presence felt on offense. Hall was 2-for-4 with an RBI double and James was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI bunt single. Hall tied Jeremy Wilkins (Sr./Smithfield, N.C.) and Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, NC) for most runs scored in the game for the Falcons (2). Peace and Carey Cheek (Fr./Baltimore, Md.) each knocked in a run.

The Falcons led 6-2 in the third inning and stretched the margin to 10-2 in the fifth. They held firm late after the Warriors scored four runs in the seventh inning.

Stephen Hamilton (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) was the winning pitcher. He scattered seven hits in six innings to improve to 1-1. Alex Edwards (Jr./Chicago, Ill.) finished off the Warriors in the last three innings.

The Falcons will play in the CIAA-WVIAC Challenge in King, N.C., this weekend. Their first game is against Fairmont State on Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at 11 a.m.
