CARY, N.C. –
Brock Holmes (So./Brunswick, N.C.) fired a four-hitter and limited East Stroudsburg University to one run as Saint Augustine's University won 5-1 in the first game of a baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.
The Falcons (3-3 overall) lost the second game 5-1. Both teams play again in a nine-inning game on Sunday, Feb. 10 at USA Baseball Complex. Starting time is 1 p.m.
The victory was significant for the Falcons, who snapped a six-game two-year losing streak to East Stroudsburg of the highly regarded Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. It is believed to be the first victory over East Stroudsburg and the first win over a PSAC school.
“It was a good win,” St. Aug Head Coach
Charles Whitaker said. “We took advantage of their mistakes. That's how we pulled the first game out. Brock did a good job of pitching.”
Holmes pitched a complete seven-inning game to improve his pitching record to 2-0 overall. The Warriors (1-1 overall) scored their only run in the sixth on a throwing error, but
Sterling James (So./New Castle, Del.) responded in the bottom of the inning with a blast over the left field wall for a home run.
The Falcons took charge in the first inning by taking a 3-0 lead.
William Thomas (Fr./Yorktown, Va.) hit a bases-loaded RBI single and
Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) both reached base on consecutive bases-loaded walks to give Holmes all the cushion he needed. The Falcons tacked on another run in the second for a 4-0 lead when
Jeremy Wilkins (Sr./Smithfield, N.C.) singled to left field for an RBI.
James was 1-for-1 with one RBI and two runs scored to lead the Falcons offensively in the first game. The foursome of Wilkins, Thomas, Hall and Peace each added an RBI.
Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.) also scored two runs for the Falcons.
The Warriors came back in the second game to take a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Falcons scored. The Falcons missed a chance to cut into the lead in the fifth inning. They had the bases loaded with no outs but failed to score. The inning ended with a double play by the Warriors.
Hall smacked a single to right field in the seventh inning to drive in the Falcons' only run. He led the Falcons in batting by going 2-for-3 with one RBI.
