Falcons Topple Chowan To Remain Unbeaten In CIAA

Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – After winning two low scoring games Saturday, Saint Augustine's University downed Chowan University 10-7 in a high-scoring baseball affair to sweep the three-game weekend series at Hawkins Field on Sunday, March 10, 2013.

The Falcons left Hawkins Field with a 14-8 overall mark including a spotless 6-0 record in the CIAA. The third matchup between the two CIAA schools was much different than the previous two games on Saturday which turned into pitching duels. On Sunday, the bats came alive as both teams each collected 11 hits.

But the Falcons took advantage of Chowan errors in the eighth inning to get the win. K'shjuan Davis (Fr./Baltimore, Md.) and Calvin Butcher (Jr./New Castle, Del.) both scored on passed balls and Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) scored on a fielding error to give the Falcons a 10-6 lead. Chowan scored in the bottom of the inning but would get no closer.

The Falcons were led in batting by the foursome of Jason Baytop (Fr./Manchester, Md.), Carey Cheek (Fr./Baltimore, Md.), Sterling James (So./New Castle, Del.) and Butcher, who each totaled two hits. Peace had two RBIs and scored two runs, and Cheek, James, and Butcher each scored two runs.

Desmond Cheek (Fr./Asheboro, N.C.) pitched six innings for the win. Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) finished off the Hawks (7-15, 3-3 CIAA) in the final three innings for the save. He allowed no hits, recorded five strikeouts and one walk.

The Falcons trailed 4-1 after three innings, but scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 7-6 lead.

The Falcons hit the road on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, for a non-conference doubleheader against Paine College in Augusta, Ga. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
