Falcons' Win Streak at 9 After Sweeping ECSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University swept Elizabeth City State University 7-4 and 10-2 in a baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex on Saturday, March 16, 2013, to stretch its winning streak to a season-high nine games.

In the process, the Falcons remained atop the CIAA standings at 8-0 and reached the 20-win plateau for the third time in four seasons under Head Coach Charles Whitaker. The Falcons improved to 20-8 overall on Saturday.

The Falcons defeated the Vikings twice the same way they have beaten most teams this season – with their potent hitting attack. Led by Daveed Todd (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) and Jason Baytop (Fr./Manchester, Md.), the Falcons pounded out 21 hits and knocked in 13 runs in two games. Todd was 5-for-8 with a double and five RBIs, and Baytop was 4-for-8 with a double and two RBIs. Eight players drove in at least one RBI for the Falcons. Bobby Delly (Fr./Sumter, S.C.) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and RBI and four runs scored.

Baytop paced the Falcons in the first game by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. His RBI single in the third inning cut the Vikings' lead to 2-1. Hall hit an RBI double and Todd smacked a one-run single in the fourth inning as the Falcons surged ahead 3-2. Baytop added a one-run double in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 4-2.

Jeremy Wilkins (Sr./Smithfield, N.C.) added a two-RBI double in the sixth for a 6-2 lead, and later scored on a wild pitch in the same inning for a 7-2 lead. The Vikings added two runs in the seventh for the final margin. Clarence Ganus (Sr./Whiteville, N.C.) pitched six and one-third innings for the victory. He scattered nine hits, struck out six and walked three.

Todd led the Falcons in the second game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and four RBIs. Delly was 3-for-3 for the Falcons in the second game.

Todd gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single, and he hit another RBI single in the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead. William Thomas (Fr./Yorktown, Va.) added a one-run single in the same inning for a 3-1 lead.

The Vikings added a run in the fifth, but the Falcons responded in the same inning. One-run singles by Ariel Polanco (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) and Todd, an RBI double by Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) and a score by Hall on a wild pitch pushed the Falcons' lead to 7-2. Todd added a two-RBI double and Carey Cheek (Fr./Baltimore, Md.) hit an RBI single in the sixth inning for the final scoring.

Desmond Cheek (Fr./Asheboro, N.C.) pitched a four-hitter in six innings to gain the win. He struck out five and walked one.

Both teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 17, 2013 in a single nine-inning game at USA Baseball Complex. Game time is 3 p.m.
