Baseball Team Edges Chowan Twice In Pitching Duels

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University held Chowan University to one run in two games for a CIAA baseball doubleheader sweep at Hawkins Field on Saturday, March 9, 2013. The Falcons won the first game 2-1 and the second game 1-0.

With the wins, the Falcons (13-8 overall) remained unbeaten in the CIAA at 5-0. The Hawks are 7-14 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA.

"It was two good games," St. Aug Head Coach Charles Whitaker said. "They could have gone either way. Pitching was excellent. Today, our pitchers threw the best they have thrown."

In the first game, the Falcons scored two runs in the fifth inning, and it held up for the victory. The Falcons allowed a run in the sixth but the Hawks would score no more as pitcher John Hailey (Sr./Rockingham, N.C.) scattered five hits in seven compete innings for the win.

Ariel Polanco (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) recorded both RBIs for the Falcons in the fifth when he singled in Jason Baytop (Fr./Manchester, Md.) and Sterling James (Soph./New Castle, Del.). Baytop went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead the Falcons in batting.

The second game went extra innings before the Falcons scored the game's only run for the victory. An RBI single by Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) scored Polanco for what turned out to be the game-winning run. The Hawks had a runner on third base with two outs but relief pitcher Stephen Hamilton (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) forced a ground out to end the game.

Starter Clarence Ganus (Sr./Whiteville, N.C.) gained the win after throwing a one-hitter in seven innings. Hamilton held the Hawks hitless in the eighth to earn the save. Both Polanco and Peace led the Falcons with two hits each.

Both teams play again at Hawkins Field on Sunday, March 10, 2013. Game time is 1 p.m.
