Falcons Scare Second-Ranked Mount Olive Late Before Falling 11-8

Box Score CARY, N.C. - Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) was 4-for-5 at the plate including a three-run home run as Saint Augustine's University staged a late rally before falling 11-8 to perennial power Mount Olive College at USA Baseball Complex on Wednesday night, April 10, 2013.

The Falcons (25-18 overall) scored three runs in the eighth inning and three runs in the ninth inning to nearly overcome an 11-2 deficit. After Peace's home run blast in the ninth, the Falcons had a man on first with two outs but a game-ending strikeout preserved the win for Mount Olive (36-4), ranked second in the nation among Division II schools. It was the second straight game that the Falcons lost a tight game after rallying late.

Peace was the top hitter for the Falcons, who pounded out 13 hits. The CIAA batting leader, Peace had three RBIs and scored two runs. Carey Cheek (Baltimore, Md.) added three RBIs on a double and Ricky Martin (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) was 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.

"We are starting to hit again," St. Aug Head Coach Charles Whitaker said. "I hope we continue to hit like that heading into the CIAA Championships next week."

The Falcons led 1-0 in the second inning on Martin's sacrifice fly which scored Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.). After the Trojans scored two runs in the third inning, the Falcons tied the score 2-2 in the third on an RBI single by Ariel Polanco (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) which scored Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.).  The Trojans then scored the next nine runs including four in the fifth inning for an 11-2 lead.

The Falcons continued to battle despite the sizable deficit. Cheek hit a three-run double in the eighth which scored Peace, Daveed Todd (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) and William Thomas (Fr./Yorktown, Va.) to slice the margin to 11-5. Peace pulled the Falcons even closer when his deep three-run shot sailed well over the left field wall. It scored him and pinch runners K'shjuan Davis (Fr./Baltimore, Md.) and Calvin Butcher (Fr./New Castle, Del.). Led by Cheek and Peace, the Falcons nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback, but the Trojans survived for the victory.

The second meeting between both teams turned out much different than the first. On Feb. 28, 2013, the Falcons lost 14-3 in Mount Olive, N.C.

The Falcons have a three-game weekend series coming up at home against Virginia State University before the regular season concludes. The teams meet in a CIAA doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, 2013 starting at 1 p.m. They battle again on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
All three games will be played at USA Baseball Complex. Saturday is Senior Day.
