Darren Burks (Jr./Matteson, Ill.) scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning to give Saint Augustine's University a 3-2 victory over Virginia State University in the second game of a CIAA baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball Complex on Saturday, April 13, 2013. The Falcons regrouped to take the second game after a 1-0 loss to the Trojans in the first game.
With the split, the Falcons (26-19 overall, 13-4 CIAA) clinched second place in the CIAA standings and will be the No. 2 seed in the CIAA Championships, which will be held Thursday, April 18 to Saturday, April 20, at Virginia State University. The Falcons entered the day with a three-game conference lead over the Trojans for second place with three league games left in the regular season. The Falcons conclude the regular season against the Trojans (17-13 overall, 10-7 CIAA) on Sunday, April 14, in a single nine-inning game at USA Baseball Complex starting at 1 p.m.
Burks beat the throw home from the pitcher off an RBI bunt by
Bobby Delly (Fr./Lancaster, S.C.) to end the game. He pinch ran for
Jeremy Wilkins (Sr./Smithfield, N.C.), who was walked to start the eighth inning. Burks advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jason Baytop (Fr./Manchester, Md.) and reached third on a single by
Calvin Butcher (Jr./New Castle, Del.).
Ariel Polanco (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with a double and Butcher was 3-for-5 to lead the Falcons in batting.
Daveed Todd (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) was 2-for-4 with a triple and double and Wilkins was 2-for-3 for the Falcons, who tallied 13 hits.
Desmond Cheek (Fr./Asheboro, N.C.) pitched a complete game to get the win. He allowed four hits and no earned runs in addition to striking out six batters and walking three.
The Falcons scored one run in the first inning and one run in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Butcher scored in the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.) and Todd scored in the second inning on an infield error. The Trojans tied the score at 2-2 in the third inning. The score was tied until the eighth inning when Burks' slide beat the catcher's tag at home plate.
In the first game, the Trojans scored on a close play at home plate off a double steal in the third inning. It was the first time the Falcons had been held scoreless this season.
Pitcher
Clarence Ganus (Sr./Whiteville, N.C.) had a solid outing in defeat for the Falcons, scattering five hits and giving up one run. Both the Falcons and Trojans each had five hits.
