Ariel Polanco (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.) and
Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.) of Saint Augustine's University combined for five RBIs, but the Falcons ended the regular season with a 12-7 CIAA baseball loss to Virginia State University at the USA Baseball Complex on Sunday, April 14, 2013.
Both teams will face each other again at the CIAA Tournament on Thursday, April 18, at Virginia State. The Falcons finished second in the conference at 13-5 overall while the Trojans tied for third at 11-7. The Trojans beat Chowan University two out of three games during the regular season to earn the No. 3 seed.
Polanco was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Scott was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for the Falcons, who cranked out 12 hits.
Jason Baytop (Fr./Manchester, Md.) was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple, and CIAA batting leader
Clarence Peace (Jr./Creedmoor, N.C.) hit a double. Despite aggressive hitting, the Falcons (26-20 overall) were hurt by four errors and 13 VSU hits.
Polanco gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single which scored
Bobby Delly (Fr./Lancaster, S.C.). In the third inning, the Trojans (18-13 overall) erupted for five runs to take a 5-1 lead. The Falcons scored their second run in the third inning when Scott scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by
Daveed Todd (Sr./Harlem, N.Y.).
The Falcons scored four runs in the fourth inning to re-take the lead at 6-5. Scott hit a two-run double down the left field line to score Baytop and
Ricky Martin (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.), and Polanco connected on a two-run single to right field to score Delly and Scott. The Trojans answered with a five-run fifth inning to regain the lead at 10-6.
The Falcons inched closer with a run in the eighth inning. Baytop tripled and scored on Delly's RBI groundout. The Trojans would tack on two runs in the ninth for the win.
