Box Score CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University almost rallied from a five-run deficit in a 7-6 non-conference baseball loss to Coker College at USA Baseball Complex on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.
Jamie Scott (Jr./Hampton, Va.) batted 4-for-5, doubled and scored three runs to lead the Falcons (25-17 overall).
Carey Cheek (Fr./Baltimore, Md.) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run while
Ricky Martin (Jr./Raleigh, N.C.) and
Chris Rogers (Sr./Chicago, Ill.) were both 2-for-4 with Martin driving in one run.
William Thomas (Fr./Yorktown, Va.) had two hits and one RBI and
Pat Hall (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in two runs and scored once.
The Falcons scared the Cobras (25-11 overall), ranked ninth in the Southeast Region, after falling behind 5-0 in the fourth inning. They scored two runs in the ninth inning to close within one run, but the Cobras recorded a strikeout on a full count to end the game. The Falcons had the tying run on third base and the winning run on first base.
The Falcons came back after falling behind in the early innings. Cheek hit an RBI double to score Scott, and Martin singled in Cheek in the fourth inning to pull within 5-2. In the fifth inning, Thomas hit an RBI single to score Scott, and Cheek hit an RBI double to score Hall as the Falcons closed within 5-4.
The Cobras scored one run in the seventh inning and another run in the eighth inning for a 7-4 lead which they took into the ninth. The Falcons made a run at the Cobras in the bottom of the ninth when Hall hit a two-run single to score Scott and Delly before the visitors held on for the win.
On Wednesday, April 10, the Falcons host national power Mount Olive College in a single game at USA Baseball Complex at 6 p.m. Mount Olive is ranked second in the NCBWA rankings and Collegiate Baseball Poll. The contest is the third straight home game for the Falcons.
