Falcons Take Two of Three From Bluefield State In Weekend Series

Box Score CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University won two of three baseball games against Bluefield State College at the USA Baseball National Training Complex over the weekend.

The Falcons relied on strong pitching to win 1-0 in the first game and 9-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, February 8, 2014. They lost 7-4 in the third game on Sunday, February 9.

The Falcons are now 2-4 overall. The Blues are 1-3 overall.

In Saturday's first game, junior pitcher Bryan Rivera (Puerto Rico) limited the Blues to four hits while striking out seven in a seven-inning complete game for the victory. The Falcons scored the eventual game-winning run on an RBI triple by sophomore Jordan Wright (Hampton, VA) in the bottom of the third inning.

"The keys to the game were good pitching and good defense," said St. Aug Head Coach Charles Whitaker about the team's first win of the season.

In Saturday's second game, junior pitcher Jeremy Sandifer (Virginia Beach, VA) allowed only two hits and recorded eight strikeouts in five innings for the win. Junior pitcher Brock Holmes (Brunswick, NC) relieved Sandifer and finished off the Blues with three strikeouts in two innings.

Wright led the Falcons' offensive attack with three RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting in the second game. Sophomore Jason Baytop (Manchester, MD) was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and freshman Corey Fields (Upper Marlboro, MD) was 2-for-4.

"The keys to the game were good pitching and good hitting. Most importantly, we had timely hits with guys in scoring position," Whitaker said about the second game. "Fields had a great game behind the plate for a freshman."

On Sunday, Baytop drove in two runs and senior Calvin Butcher (New Castle, DE) was 3-for-5 with one RBI for the Falcons. Senior Darien Hardaway (Atlanta, GA) also added an RBI in the loss.

The Falcons visit NCAA Division II powerhouse Mount Olive College in a single nine-inning game in Mount Olive, N.C. on Wednesday, February 12. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
