Falcons Sweep Paine In Baseball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. – Saint Augustine's University combined for 30 runs and 30 hits in a baseball doubleheader sweep of Paine College at Lions Field on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. The Falcons won 12-8 the first game and 18-9 the second game.

Sophomore Jordan Wright (Hampton, VA) paced the Falcons (9-14 overall) with five RBIs combined while seniors Darryl Washington-Hardy (River Grove, Ill.) and Calvin Butcher (New Castle, DE) each added three RBIs. Senior Darien Hardaway (Atlanta, GA) batted 5-for-7 for a .714 average and scored five runs.

Senior Darren Burks (Matteson, Ill.) crossed the plate four times. Five Falcons scored three times including senior Jamie Scott (Hampton, VA), sophomore Jason Baytop (Manchester, MD), sophomore Carey Cheek (Baltimore, MD), sophomore William Thomas (Yorktown, VA), and Washington-Hardy.

The Falcons banged out 13 hits in the first game. Wright and freshman Corey Fields (Upper Marlboro, MD) had two RBIs apiece while senior Clarence Peace (Creedmoor, NC), Baytop and Hardaway each batted in a run. Freshman Corey Brassington (Raleigh, NC) was the winning pitcher.

The Falcons continued their offensive explosion in the second game, amassing 17 hits. They set season-highs in runs (18), hits (17) and RBIs (14) in the second game.

The trio of Butcher, Wright and Washington-Hardy each totaled three RBIs in the second game. Wright was 4-for-6 with a double and one run scored, and Washington-Hardy was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Hardaway was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Five Falcons each drove in a run. They were senior Joshua Easter (Chicago, Ill.), Cheek, Thomas, Baytop and Scott, who was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

The Falcons led 12-9 heading into the seventh inning, but scored six runs in the seventh for the final score. Peace was the winning pitcher in the second game.

The Falcons are back in action Wednesday, March 12, 2014. They visit Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
