Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior
Darien Hardaway (Atlanta, GA) smacked a two-run homer for Saint Augustine's University in a 5-4 CIAA baseball loss to Winston-Salem State University at BB&T Ballpark on Sunday, March 16, 2014. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather.
Hardaway was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored for the Falcons. Sophomores
William Thomas (Yorktown, VA) and
Jason Baytop (Manchester, MD) each knocked in a run and senior
Calvin Butcher (New Castle, DE) scored twice. Senior
Clarence Peace (Creedmoor, NC) was 2-for-3 with a triple.
The Falcons (3-4 CIAA, 9-18 overall) led 1-0 in the first inning when Butcher scored on a sacrifice fly by Thomas. Butcher reached base on a single.
The lead expanded to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run blast by Hardaway over the right field wall. Hardaway scored himself and sophomore
Carey Cheek (Baltimore, MD), who reached base on a single. The Rams (8-3 CIAA, 17-9 overall) tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Falcons regained the lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth. Butcher led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. He advanced to third on an error by the catcher and scored on an infield error. The Rams came back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 4-4 and scored the eventual game-winning run in the sixth.
The next game for the Falcons is Tuesday, March 18, against UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C. starting at 6 p.m. It will be a single nine-inning contest.
