Falcons Stun Nationally-Ranked UNC Pembroke 9-5 In Baseball

Box Score PEMBROKE, N.C. – Junior Jamie Scott (Hampton, VA) recorded two RBIs as Saint Augustine's University relied on a big second inning to stop nationally-ranked UNC Pembroke 9-5 in a non-conference baseball contest at Sammy Cox Field on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.

The Falcons defeated a nationally-ranked team for the first time in recent memory. The Braves are ranked 14th in Division II in the latest Collegiate Baseball rankings. It is also the first win over the Braves since 1995 though neither team has records of the 2002 season on the ncaa.com database.

The foursome of senior Calvin Butcher (New Castle, DE), senior Clarence Peace (Creedmoor, NC), senior Darien Hardaway (Atlanta, GA) and senior Darryl Washington-Hardy (River Grove, Ill) each added an RBI for the Falcons, who amassed 12 hits in the nine-inning game. The trio of Scott, sophomore William Thomas (Yorktown, VA) and sophomore Carey Cheek (Baltimore, MD) each had two hits. Thomas and sophomore Jason Baytop (Manchester, MD) each scored two runs in addition to Scott.
Senior Alex Edwards (Chicago, IL) of the Falcons gained the win after allowing only two hits in four innings. Freshman Corey Brassington (Raleigh, NC) thwarted a Braves' rally in the final five innings for the save.

The Falcons fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but erupted for five runs in the second inning to take charge. Thomas started the inning with a single and later scored on Washington-Hardy's RBI single. Scott connected on a two-run single to score Hardaway and Baytop, who reached base on a fielding error while Hardaway reached base on a walk. Butcher hit a single to score Washington-Hardy and Peace singled to score Scott.

The Braves threatened with the bases loaded in the second inning, but Edwards struck out the batter for the third out. In the third inning, the Braves had men on first and third with one out, but Edwards forced a foul out and a fly out to end the inning.

The Falcons padded their lead to 7-1 after scoring one run in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth inning. Scott scored on an error after leading off with a single in the fourth inning. Baytop led off the fifth inning with a single and scored on a wild pitch.

The lead was sliced to 7-5 after the Braves scored three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Brassington and the Falcons' defense prevented the Braves from scoring any more runs. In the fifth, Brassington forced a fly out to end the inning with men on second and third. In the sixth, he closed out the inning with a strikeout with men on first and third. The Braves threatened again in the eighth inning, but Brassington forced a groundout with men on first and third.

The Falcons padded their lead with two runs in the ninth inning. Thomas began the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Hardaway singled in Cheek, who reached base on a single. In the ninth inning, the Braves loaded the bases with two outs, but Brassington forced a fly out to end the contest.

The Braves had 13 hits but left 16 men on base due to the pitching of Edwards and Brassington and the Falcons' defense. The Falcons left 10 men on base.

The Falcons improved to 10-18 overall while handing UNCP its seventh loss in 27 games. They will take a break before resuming play at home against Claflin University on Wednesday, March 26, 2014. The site is USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., and the contest starts at 2 p.m.
