St. Aug Tops Claflin 6-3 In Baseball

Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – The foursome of Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC), Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD), Darien Hardaway (Sr./Atlanta, GA) and Corey Fields (Fr./Upper Marlboro, MD) each drove in a run for Saint Augustine's University in a 6-3 baseball victory over Claflin University at Buffaloe Road Park on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.

The victory was the second straight for the Falcons, who totaled 12 hits. Cheek was 3-for-3 with one run scored, and Hardaway was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Calvin Butcher (Sr./New Castle, DE) was 2-for-4 with one run scored and William Thomas (Soph./Yorktown, VA) finished 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Corey Brassington (Fr./Raleigh, NC) improved to 2-0 as a pitcher. He scattered nine hits in seven innings and allowed only two unearned runs. Thomas pitched the eighth inning and Cheek earned the save after retiring the side in the ninth inning.

The Falcons struck first in the first inning. Butcher scored on a balk after getting on base with a single. The lead was 2-0 in the second inning when Cheek scored on a passed ball after reaching base on a single.

Claflin scored one run in the third inning but the Falcons scored one run in the fourth and two in the sixth for a 5-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester,MD) scored on Fields' groundout after reaching base on an error. In the sixth inning, Peace scored on Cheek's sacrifice fly and Hardaway doubled in Thomas. Peace started the inning with a deep double to the left field fence and Thomas followed with a single.

Claflin scored twice in the top of the seventh to cut the Falcons' lead to 5-3. The Falcons scored the final run in the bottom of the seventh on Peace's sacrifice fly which scored Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA), who reached base on a single.

The Falcons improved to 11-18 with the win while Claflin fell to 14-12. The victory avenged a 14-8 defeat to Claflin in Orangeburg, S.C., earlier this month.

The Falcons will hit the road on Thursday, March 27, to finish their season series against CIAA champion Winston-Salem State University. The contest was originally as the second game of a doubleheader that was postponed March 16 due to inclement weather. Both teams will play in Mocksville, N.C. in a seven-inning game starting at 1 p.m.
