Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University relied on the hitting of sophomore
William Thomas (Yorktown, VA) and the pitching of junior
Bryan Rivera (Cida, Puerto Rico) to sweep Lincoln (Pa.) University in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at USA Baseball National Training Complex on Sunday, March 9, 2014. The Falcons won 5-4 in game one and 4-2 in game two to take three of four in the four-game weekend series.
Thomas drove in three runs on 2-for-3 batting in the first game. He finished the series hitting 8-for-11 with eight RBIs for a .727 average. Rivera was masterful in the second game. He limited Lincoln to two hits and fanned a season-high 12 batters in seven complete innings for the win.
The Falcons improved to 3-1 in the CIAA and 7-14 overall. The Lions fell to 1-3 in the CIAA and 1-9 overall.
In the first game, the Falcons led 2-1 in the first inning when Thomas doubled home sophomores
Carey Cheek (Baltimore, MD) and
Jordan Wright (Hampton, VA), who both reached base on walks. Junior
Sterling James (New Castle, DE) added another run in the second inning on an RBI triple. Freshman
Corey Brassington (Raleigh, NC) scored on James' hit after reaching base on a single.
The Lions scored in the third inning, but the Falcons added two runs in the fifth for a 5-2 lead. James started the inning with a single and later scored from third base on a passed ball. The Falcons scored the other run on a Thomas' single which scored Cheek, who reached base on a double and stole third base. The Lions scored one run in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning for the final score.
Freshman
Ian Delemarre (Amsterdam, Netherlands) scattered seven hits in seven complete innings to pick up the victory. He forced a groundout with one man on third base in the seventh to end the game.
The Falcons tallied seven hits, including two each by Thomas and James. For the Lions, Will Hodges was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, the Falcons opened the scoring in the third inning when James stole home from third base.
Three more runs were scored by the Falcons in the fifth inning. Cheek hit a two-run double to score Brassington and freshman
Corey Fields (Upper Marlboro, MD), who started the inning with a double. Brassington reached base on an error. Thomas hit an RBI double to score Wright, who was hit by a pitch to reach base.
Rivera pitched six shutout innings. The Lions scored two unearned runs in the seventh inning for the final score.
The Falcons head south for two non-conference games this week. They visit Paine College in Augusta, Ga., on Tuesday, March 11, and Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C., on Wednesday, March 12, in single nine-inning games. Both contests will begin at 1 p.m.
