Peace Collects Six RBIs In Doubleheader Split Against VSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. – Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC) of Saint Augustine's University tallied six RBIs on 5-for-9 hitting including two doubles as the Falcons split a doubleheader against Virginia State University at Whaley Colbert Field on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. The Falcons won the first game 8-7 and lost the second contest 10-6.

The Falcons took two from the Trojans in the four-game series, which began Monday. They are currently fourth in the CIAA at 5-7 and their overall record is 13-21. The top four teams in the league advance to the CIAA Tournament at the end of the regular season later in April. The Trojans are third at 12-7 in the CIAA and 19-12 overall.

The Falcons' offense was cranking Tuesday as they scored 14 runs on 27 hits. In addition to Peace's productive day at the plate, Darien Hardaway (Sr./Atlanta, GA) went 4-for-6 with a double and two RBIs and Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA) went 4-for-5 with a double and three runs scored.

CIAA Player of the Week William Thomas (Soph./Yorktown, VA) went 4-for-7. Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) and Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, MD) each knocked in two runs.

Peace went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the first game. He sparked a five-run rally in the third inning which gave the Falcons a 5-2 lead. The Falcons scored their first run on his single which scored Scott, who got on base with a single. Baytop added an RBI groundout which scored Jordan Wright (Soph./Hampton, VA), who reached base on a single. Hardaway's RBI double scored Peace, and Washington-Hardy hit a two-run single to score Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD) and Hardaway. Cheek reached base on a walk.

The Falcons padded the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning on Hardaway's single which scored Peace, who doubled earlier. The Trojans came back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs for a 7-6 lead.

The Falcons prevailed in the latter innings. Baytop tied the contest in the sixth inning on an infield error and Peace smacked what turned out to be the game-winning hit in the seventh when his single brought in Scott. Baytop reached base on a fielder's choice and Scott reached base on a double.

Corey Fields (Fr./Upper Marlboro, MD) earned the win in relief after entering the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Falcons trailing by one run. He ended up striking out three and allowing no runs in three and one-third innings. The Falcons amassed 15 hits in the first game.

Peace added four RBIs on 2-for-4 hitting as the Falcons rallied late in the second game but the deficit was too much to overcome. The Trojans used a six-run third inning to open an 8-0 lead. An RBI single by Peace scored Scott and put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Scott reached base on a single. The Falcons, who had 12 hits, added another run in the sixth when Cheek singled in Sterling James (Jr./New Castle, DE), who reached base on a single.

The Trojans made the score 10-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Peace ignited a four-run seventh inning with a three-RBI double, which scored Darren Burks (Sr./Matteson, IL), Wright and James. Burks reached base on a fielder's choice, Wright was walked and James reached base on an error to load the bases. Peace later scored in the inning off of Baytop's single, but the Falcons could get no closer.

The Falcons return home this weekend with a four-game series against Chowan University. Both teams play a doubleheader Saturday, April 5, at USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. with the first game starting at 1 p.m. and the second game starting approximately at 3 p.m. Saturday will be Senior Day for the Falcons.

Both teams return to action Sunday, April 6 in another doubleheader at the same site. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Admission is free.
