St. Aug Sweeps ECSU To Secure CIAA Baseball Tourney Berth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Both Jeremy Sandifer (Jr./Virginia Beach, VA) and Bryan Rivera (Jr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) had masterful pitching performances as Saint Augustine's University swept Elizabeth City State University 3-1 and 11-0 in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Knobbs Creek Park on Saturday, April 12, 2014.

With the wins, the Falcons qualified for the CIAA Baseball Tournament, which will be held April 17-19 in Petersburg, Va. The Falcons entered the day two games ahead ECSU and needing two victories in the four-game series to gain the fourth seed in the tournament.

After Saturday, the Falcons are 8-10 in the CIAA and 16-26 overall. The Vikings are fifth at 4-14 in the CIAA and 7-19 overall.

Sandifer set the tone on the mound in the first game. He threw a one-hitter and struck out six batters with four walks in seven complete innings. Rivera followed with a five-hitter and 16 strikeouts for a seven-inning complete shutout. He did not walk a batter. After Saturday, Rivera leads the CIAA with 68 strikeouts and Sandifer is third in the conference with 54 strikeouts.

Rivera's pitching kept the Falcons in contention the first game. The Vikings scored in the third inning for a 1-0 lead which held up until the fifth inning when the Falcons scored three runs. Sterling James (Jr./New Castle, DE) hit an RBI groundout to score Corey Fields (Fr./Upper Marlboro, MD), which tied the game at 1-1. The Falcons took the lead for good in the same inning when Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC) hit a two-run double to score Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA) and Calvin Butcher (Sr./New Castle, DE).
Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, MD) went 2-for-3 and James went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Falcons in the first game.

The Falcons scored every inning in the second game. Butcher put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the first inning when he scored on an error. Butcher then hit a two-run single to score Darryl Washington-Hardy (Jr./River Grove, IL) and Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD) in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.

Baytop singled in Peace in the third inning and James hit an RBI single to score Scott in the fourth inning. Baytop smacked an RBI double to score Peace in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead.

The Falcons scored four runs in the sixth inning. James hit an RBI single to score Butcher and later scored on Peace's RBI single. Baytop capped the sixth with a two-run homer which also scored Peace for a 10-0 lead. Washington-Hardy finished the scoring for the Falcons with a run off an error in the seventh.

The Falcons had 14 hits in the second game. Baytop was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs, and Washington-Hardy was 3-for-4 with a double. Butcher was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and James was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Peace was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Falcons play another doubleheader against the Vikings at Knobbs Creek Park on Sunday, April 13. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m
