St. Aug Sweeps ECSU In Baseball Doubleheader

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University defeated Elizabeth City State University 6-5 and 12-11 in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Knobbs Creek Park on Sunday, April 13, 2014, to conclude the regular season.
 
The Falcons (10-10 CIAA, 18-26 overall) secured the fourth seed in the CIAA Tournament, which will be held April 17-19 on the Virginia State University campus in Ettrick, Va. They will face top-seed Winston-Salem State University in the first round on Thursday, April 17.
 
The Vikings (4-16 CIAA, 7-21 overall) finished fifth in the CIAA standings. They were swept by the Falcons in the four-game weekend series.
 
In the first game, Sterling James (Jr./New Castle, DE) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Falcons. Sean Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) scattered eight hits and had six strikeouts in four innings for the win. Corey Brassington (Fr./Raleigh, NC) earned the save after allowing two hits and striking out four batters in three innings.
 
The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when James scored on a passed ball and Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC) scored on an error. The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Daniel Graham, but the Falcons scored three runs in the second for a 5-2 lead. James hit a two-run single to score Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA) and Calvin Butcher (Sr./New Castle, DE), and James later scored on a Peace RBI single.
 
The Vikings scored one run apiece in the second and fourth innings to get within 5-4, but Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, MD) scored on an error to give the Falcons a two-run lead in the sixth. The Vikings scored one run in the seventh inning and threatened to score more for the win. They had two men on base with one out, but Corey Brassington struck out a batter for the second out and the next batter flied out to end the game.
 
In the second contest, Baytop was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Falcons. Scott went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ian Delemarre (Fr./Amsterdam, Netherlands) was the winning pitcher after scattering six hits and striking out five batters in three innings. William Thomas (Soph./Yorktown, VA) gained the save by giving up two hits and striking out three in two and two-third innings.
 
The Falcons erased an early 1-0 deficit in the second game with nine runs in the second inning. Scott started the scoring with a two-run single which scored Darien Hardaway (Sr./Atlanta, GA) and Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD). James earned an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Corey Fields (Fr./Upper Marlboro, MD).
 
Peace had an RBI sacrifice fly which scored Scott, and Baytop hit a two-run single to score Butcher and James. Jordan Wright (Soph./Hampton, VA) scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Cheek, and Baytop scored on an error. Fields hit an RBI single to score Hardaway.
 
The Vikings chipped away at the 9-1 deficit and eventually tied the game at 9-9 heading into the fifth inning. They scored three runs in the second, two runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to knot the score.
 
The Falcons gained a little breathing room by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. Scott scored on an error, and Joshua Easter (Sr./Chicago, IL) scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Baytop. The Vikings pulled within 11-10 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Falcons added a run in the seventh on Hardaway's single which scored Baytop for a 12-10 lead. Graham of the Vikings hit his third homer of the day and second in the game for the final margin.
