Box Score 2 PETERSBURG, Va. – Saint Augustine's University ran out of steam in a 13-4 loss to Chowan University after dropping a 6-5 15-inning heartbreaker to Winston-Salem State University on the CIAA Baseball Tournament's first day at Whalen Colbert Field on the Virginia State University campus Thursday, April 17, 2014. The Chowan loss in the double-elimination tournament ended the Falcons' season.
The Falcons played 25 innings in a span of seven hours and 25 minutes. The contest against Winston-Salem State lasted four hours and 25 minutes. They played Chowan approximately 30 minutes after the game against Winston-Salem State ended. The WSSU game started at 1:06 p.m. and the Chowan contest ended at approximately 10 p.m.
The Falcons led 1-0 in the second inning against WSSU and were ahead by one run in the eighth, ninth and 10
th only for WSSU to tie the game in the bottom half of each inning. The Rams clinched the win on a single by CIAA Baseball MVP Ray Crawford in the 15
th.
Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA) went 3-for-5 with an RBI while
Calvin Butcher (Sr./New Castle, DE) and
Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC) each drove in a run for the Falcons, who outhit the Rams 15-11 but committed more errors (3-1).
The Falcons, seeded fourth, appeared headed for victory over the top-seeded Rams after taking a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth. Peace hit a single to score Butcher for the Falcons' first lead since the second inning. The Rams tied the score in the bottom ninth to send the contest to extra innings.
The Falcons (18-28 overall) re-gained the lead in the 10
th when Butcher scored
Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, MD) with an RBI single after Baytop reached base on a triple. The lead lasted until the bottom half of the 10
th when the Rams scored. Crawford clinched the win for the Rams in the 15
th with an RBI single.
The Falcons led 1-0 in the second inning on a Scott single which scored
Darien Hardaway (Jr./Atlanta, GA). The Rams scored two runs in the third for a 2-1 lead which held up through the eighth. Hardaway reached base on an error which allowed Peace and
Sterling James (Jr./New Castle, DE) to score for a 3-2 Falcons' lead. The Rams tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth on a Conner Andrus home run.
Both starter
Bryan Rivera (Jr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) and reliever
Jeremy Sandifer (Jr./Virginia Beach, Va.) had solid pitching outings for the Falcons. Rivera hurled a five-hitter and struck out eight and Sandifer scattered six hits and recorded 10 strikeouts for the loss.
Drained from playing WSSU, the Falcons fell behind to Chowan by the third inning. The score was 11-0 in the eighth when the Falcons plated their first run on a sacrifice fly by
Darren Burks (Sr./Chicago, Ill) which scored Peace.
The Falcons added three more runs in the ninth. Butcher reached base on an error which scored
Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD) and Peace doubled in
Darryl Washington-Hardy (Jr./River Grove, IL) and Butcher.
Peace went 2-for-5 with two doubles, and RBI and one run scored against Chowan. Cheek was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
