Baytop of St. Aug Hits Grand Slam In Losses To Chowan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, MD) smacked a grand slam home run for Saint Augustine's University in CIAA doubleheader baseball losses to Chowan University at USA Baseball National Training Complex on Sunday, April 6, 2014. The Falcons lost 23-3 in the first game and 8-7 in the second game.
 
Baytop hit a grand slam in the second game to highlight a six-run third inning for a 6-1 lead. After Calvin Butcher (New Castle, DE) scored on a bases-loaded walk to William Thomas (Soph./Yorktown, VA), Baytop slammed a pitch over the left field wall for the grand slam. Corey Brassington (Fr./Raleigh, NC) added another run in the inning with an RBI single which scored Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD).
 
Chowan rallied to re-gain the lead at 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Falcons tied the score when Jordan Wright (Soph./Hampton, VA) singled to score Butcher. The Hawks scored a run in the top of the seventh inning and held the Falcons scoreless in the bottom half for the win.
 
Baytop went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored for the Falcons, who had 10 hits. Wright and Cheek were both 2-for-4 and Thomas went 2-for-2.
 
The first game was tight in the first four innings. The Falcons pulled within 3-2 in the fourth on a Darien Hardaway (Sr./Atlanta, GA) double which scored Baytop and a Darryl Washington-Hardy (Jr./River Grove, Ill.) single which scored Hardaway.
 
The Hawks scored 12 runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Falcons. They added six more runs in the sixth before the Falcons scored again. Washington-Hardy singled in Cheek in the bottom sixth, and the Hawks finished the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
 
Washington-Hardy went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Peace went 3-for-3 for the Falcons, who had 10 hits. Cheek went 2-for-3.
 
The Falcons are fourth in the CIAA standings at 6-10, and their overall record is 14-24. The Hawks are tied for first percentage wise in the CIAA at 15-5 and are 16-21 overall.
 
The Falcons venture out of conference for a doubleheader against Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C. on Tuesday, April 8. Game times are 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
