Peace Homers Twice In Losses To Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C. – Clarence Peace (Sr./Creedmoor, NC) of Saint Augustine's University hit two home runs in an 11-7 baseball loss to Francis Marion University in the first game of a doubleheader at Sparrow Stadium on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. The Falcons lost the second game 20-4.

Peace homered to left center field in the second inning to spark a four-run rally for a 4-1 lead. Darryl Washington-Hardy (Jr./River Grove, Ill.) later hit an RBI double to score Jason Baytop (Soph./Manchester, Md.) and Washington-Hardy scored on a double by Jamie Scott (Sr./Hampton, VA). Calvin Butcher (Sr./New Castle, DE) scored Scott on a double.

Francis Marion came right back and scored eight runs in the bottom half of the second inning to lead 9-4. Peace homered to left center field again in the third inning to trim the deficit to 9-5. After Francis Marion scored on a homer in the bottom of the third, Sterling James (Jr./New Castle, DE) registered a two-run double in the fourth inning to score Scott and Washington-Hardy that trimmed the deficit to 10-7. Francis Marion added one run in the sixth for the final score.

Peace went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Falcons. James had a double and two RBIs, and Washington-Hardy went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Scott had a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

In the second game, Carey Cheek (Soph./Baltimore, MD) hit an RBI single to score Baytop which pulled the Falcons within 2-1 in the second inning. Francis Marion scored five runs in the same inning to open a 7-1 lead.

The Falcons scored three runs in the third inning to close the deficit to 7-4. Scott scored on Baytop's single and Darien Hardaway (Sr./Atlanta, GA) connected on a two-run triple which scored Baytop and William Thomas (Soph./Yorktown, VA). Francis Marion scored 13 runs between the third and fifth innings to put the contest out of reach.
Scott went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored for the Falcons. Baytop went 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored.

The Falcons dropped to 14-26 overall. Francis Marion improved to 21-17.

The Falcons conclude the regular season with an important four-game series on the road against CIAA foe Elizabeth City State University this weekend. Both teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13 with starting times at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day. The Falcons need two wins to advance to the CIAA Championships next weekend in Petersburg, Va.
