Falcons Rally In Seventh To Defeat Claflin 9-3 In Baseball

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Led by Tim Carter's (So./Lumberton, NC) three-RBI double, Saint Augustine's University scored six runs in the seventh and final inning to break open a tie game for a 9-3 non-conference baseball victory over Claflin University at Mirmow Field on Monday, March 9, 2015.
 
The contest was the first of a doubleheader between the teams. The Falcons lost the second game 3-2 in nine innings. They are now 5-11 overall and Claflin is 5-15 overall.
 
Carter batted 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Falcons in the first contest. Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS) was 2-for-3 with one run scored while Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD), Carey Cheek (Jr./Baltimore, MD) and Darrell Langston (Fr./Chicago, IL) each had an RBI for the Falcons, who amassed 10 hits.
 
Langston started the seventh-inning rally by scoring McDonald on a single for a 4-3 Falcons' lead. Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored on a wild pitch before Carter scored Langston, Baytop and Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE) on a double for an 8-3 lead. Carter capped the scoring by reaching home on an infield error.
 
Claflin led 3-2 after four innings, but Baytop tied the game in the sixth inning with a solo shot to left centerfield for a home run.
 
The Falcons led 2-0 in the first inning. Carter scored James on a double and Carey Cheek (Jr./Baltimore, MD) scored Carter on a single. Claflin gained a 3-2 lead with two runs in the second inning and one run in the fourth inning before the Falcons scored the last seven runs for the win.
 
Bryan Rivera (Sr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) scattered eight hits and recorded seven strikeouts and two earned runs in seven complete innings for the pitching victory.
 
The Falcons lost the second game in extra innings when Claflin singled home the game-winning run in the ninth inning. The visitors left five men on base in the final three innings including a runner on third base with no outs in the seventh inning and runners on second and first with one out in the eighth inning.
 
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cheek scored on an infield error. Claflin scored one run each in the second and third innings for a 2-1 lead, but Joshua Bumgardner (Fr./Durham, NC) scored Cheek on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to tie the game. The score was knotted at 2-2 before Claflin scored in the ninth for the victory.

A doubleheader between the Falcons and Paine College set for Tuesday, March 10, in Augusta, Ga., has been canceled. The Falcons open CIAA play this weekend against The Lincoln in a four-game series. The first twinbill is Saturday, March 14, in Lincoln University, Pa. The first game begins 1 p.m. and the second game starts at approximately 3 p.m.
