Falcons Down Bluefield State Twice To Sweep Four-Game Baseball Series

CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University swept the four-game weekend series against Bluefield State College after winning 7-2 in the first game and 9-2 in the second game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Sunday, March 22, 2015.
 
The Falcons improved their record to 9-13 overall. Bluefield State dropped to 4-10 overall.
 
In the first game, Bryan Rivera (Sr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) scattered six hits in seven complete innings for the pitching victory. The CIAA leader in strikeouts, Rivera fanned four to raise his total to 42. He is 3-2 on the season.
 
Timothy Carter (So./Lumberton, NC) collected two RBIs and scored one run on 2-for-3 hitting. Christopher Ingram (Jr./Smithtown, NY)  was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored and Carey Cheek (Jr./Baltimore, MD) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Falcons, who totaled eight hits.
 
The Falcons scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. In the first inning, Ingram scored Roberto Rivera (Fr./Millville, NJ) on a single. In the second inning, Carter scored Carey Cheek on a double and Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) scored Carter on a single.
 
Bluefield State scored one run in the top of the third inning, but the Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 5-1. Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS) scored Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE) on a fielder's choice and McDonald later scored on infield error.
 
Bluefield State closed within 5-2 with a run in the fourth inning. The Falcons stretched the lead to 7-2 in the fifth inning when Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored Ingram on a groundout and Carter scored Carey Cheek on a single.
 
In the second game, Desmond Cheek (So./Franklinville, NC) allowed six hits and recorded six strikeouts in seven complete innings for the win. He improved to 3-2 as a pitcher.
 
Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored for the Falcons, who tallied seven hits. Roberto Rivera and James each knocked in two runs and Garcia was 1-for-2 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Joshua Bumgardner (Fr./Durham, NC) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
 
The Falcons scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Roberto Rivera scored Baytop on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Garcia scored McDonald on a double and Baytop scored Garcia on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
 
Bluefield State cut the Falcons' lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning, but the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning to put the game away.
 
In the fifth inning, James scored Bumgardner on a sacrifice fly and Baytop scored on a pitcher's error. McDonald scored Roberto Rivera on a single for a 6-1 lead.
 
In the sixth inning, Baytop scored Carter on a single and Rivera scored Bumgardner on a single. James scored Baytop on a sacrifice fly to give the Falcons a 9-1 lead. Bluefield State finished the scoring with a run in the seventh inning.
 
The Falcons will host Claflin University at Buffaloe Road Park in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, March 25. The first game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the second game at approximately 3 p.m.
