Sean Brassington Hurls Two-Hit Shutout In Baseball Win Over Claflin

RALEIGH, N.C. – Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) fired a two-hit shutout through six innings to lead Saint Augustine's University past Claflin University 2-0 in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Buffaloe Road Park on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.
 
CIAA pitcher of the week Jeremy Sandifer (Sr./Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up the save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning for the Falcons (10-14 overall). Claflin won the first game 8-7.
 
In the second game, Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD) was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored for the Falcons. His double in the sixth inning scored Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Baytop scored the Falcons' other run in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS).
 
Both Carey Cheek (Jr./Baltimore, MD) and Washington-Hardy were 1-for-2 at the plate with Cheek connecting on a double. The Falcons totaled four hits in the second game.
 
In the first game, the Falcons opened a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Baytop stole home for the first run, and McDonald scored Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE) on a fielder's choice. Cheek scored Christopher Ingram (Jr./Smithtown, NY) on a single, and Timothy Carter (So./Lumberton, NC) scored McDonald on a sacrifice fly.
 
Claflin (12-19 overall) cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the second inning, but the Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-3 lead. Darrell Langston (Fr./Chicago, IL) scored James on a single, and Cheek scored Langston on a single.
 
Claflin added three runs in the third inning to tie the game 6-6. Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh inning when Claflin scored two runs for an 8-6 lead.
 
The Falcons loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Roberto Rivera (Fr./Millville, NJ) scored Cheek on a single, but Claflin tagged out a runner caught between third base and home plate for the final out.
 
Cheek had two RBIs and one run scored on 4-for-4 hitting for the Falcons, who totaled 11 hits. Claflin finished with eight hits.
 
The Falcons will open the CIAA portion of their schedule against Chowan University in a four-game series this weekend. Both teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, at Optimist Park in Raleigh, N.C. The first game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the second game at approximately 3 p.m. on both days.
