Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. – Saint Augustine's University held an early lead in both games, but the Falcons lost 5-4 and 5-1 to Virginia State University in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at Whaley Colbert Field on Saturday, April 11, 2015.
The Falcons are tied with Virginia State and Chowan University for second in the CIAA standings. The Falcons and Trojans are 3-3 and the Hawks are 7-7. Winston-Salem State University leads the conference at 7-1, and The Lincoln (Pa.) University is fifth at 0-6. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the CIAA Baseball Championships, which will be held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from April 30, through May 2.
The Falcons and Trojans will play another doubleheader at Whaley Colbert Field on Sunday, April 12. Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
In the first game, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Corey Brassington (So./Raleigh, NC) scored Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) on a single. The Trojans went ahead 3-1 with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Falcons pulled within 3-2 in the top of the third inning when Roberto Rivera (Fr./Millville, NJ) scored on a wild pitch. The Trojans (17-9 overall) responded with a run in the bottom of the third for a 4-2 lead. The Trojans tacked on another run for a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning. The Falcons (13-19 overall) nudged within 5-4 when Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored Rivera and Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE) on a two-run single but would get no closer. Both Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD) and Washington-Hardy went 2-for-4 in the first game for the Falcons, who finished with eight hits. The trio of Joshua Markins, Tyler Coleman and Jamison Griffin went 2-for-3 for the Trojans, who collected 10 hits. The second game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Joshua Bumgardner (Fr./Durham, NC) gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead on an RBI double which scored Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS). The Trojans scored three runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning for the final score. Bumgardner went 2-for-2 with a double and one RBI for the Falcons, who had four hits. Markins went 3-for-3 with a double and one run scored for the Trojans, who had seven hits.
