Falcons Fall 2-1 and 4-3 To Winston-Salem State In Baseball

CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University stayed close with nationally-ranked Winston-Salem State University before losing 2-1 and 4-3 in a CIAA baseball doubleheader on Senior Day at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Saturday, April 18, 2015.
 
In the first game, the Falcons fell behind 2-0 before scoring their only run in the sixth inning. Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) drove in Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD) on a single.
 
Baytop went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and one run scored for the Falcons, who finished with four hits. Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
 
Bryan Rivera (Sr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) was stellar in a losing pitching effort. He scattered four hits and struck out six batters with no walks. The standout pitcher only allowed one earned run. Jordan Carlton and Jordan Cummings of the Rams combined on a four-hitter with Carlton getting the win.
 
Six Falcon seniors were honored between the first and second games. They were Desmond Cheek (Sr./Franklinton, NC), Philip Hathcock (Sr./Apex, NC), Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE), Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL), Rivera and Sandifer.
 
In the second game, the Falcons tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when Garcia scored Roberto Rivera (Fr./Millville, NJ) on a sacrifice fly. The Rams scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings for a 3-1 lead, but the Falcons trimmed the margin in the bottom of the fifth when Roberto Rivera scored on a wild pitch.
 
The Rams scored one run in the top of the sixth inning for a 4-2 lead. The Falcons finished the scoring when Corey Brassington (So./Raleigh, NC) scored Washington-Hardy on a single in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Baytop went 3-for-4 for the Falcons, who tallied seven hits. Jeremy Sandifer (Sr./Virginia Beach, VA) and Sean Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) combined on a five-hitter with Sandifer taking the loss. The Rams used three pitchers with Devin McLemore gaining the win and Cummings credited with the save.
 
The Falcons are 4-8 in the CIAA and 14-24 overall. The Rams, ranked 29th in the Collegiate Baseball Division II rankings, are 11-1 in the CIAA and 31-12 overall.
 
The Falcons will travel to Columbia, S.C., to visit Benedict College on Wednesday, April 22. Game times are 1 p.m. and approximately 3 p.m.
