Box Score CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University held its own against nationally-ranked University of Mount Olive in a 6-2 non-conference baseball loss at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.
The margin was much closer than the first meeting between both teams on February 3 in Mount Olive, N.C. The Trojans won 11-3 in the Falcons' season opener.
On Wednesday, the game was tied 1-1 through five innings, but the Trojans scored four runs in the sixth inning and one run seventh inning to gain breathing room. The Falcons loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning, but only scored one run for the final margin.
The Falcons (11-16 overall) scored the game's first run in the second inning. Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) scored Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) on a groundout. The 20th-ranked Trojans (25-9 overall) tied the game in the third inning, then took a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning. They added another run in the seventh inning.
The Falcons scored their final run in the ninth inning. Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS) crossed home plate on a bases-loaded walk. The pitching trio of starter Philip Hathcock (Jr./Apex, NC), and relievers Sean Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) and Noah Borntrager (Fr./Cary, NC) recorded no earned runs for the Falcons. They allowed five hits combined, but the Falcons committed seven errors. The Trojans used seven pitchers with Jose Serrano getting the win. They held the Falcons to three hits, but finished with four errors. Offensively, Kilgore Gailmard and Brett Lang each had two RBIs for the Trojans.
The Falcons return to CIAA play on Friday, April 3, when they host Chowan University in a doubleheader at the USA Baseball National Training Complex. The first game is at 1 p.m. and the second game is at approximately 3 p.m.
