Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University tallied 21 hits in two games combined to sweep Chowan University in a CIAA baseball doubleheader at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Friday, April 3, 2015. The Falcons won 11-2 in the first game and 7-6 in the second game.
With the victories, the Falcons gained sole possession of second place in the CIAA standings. They are 3-1 in the conference and Chowan is third at 5-7. The Falcons won three of four games against Chowan in the season series.
The Falcons amassed 11 hits in the first contest. All of their runs were scored in the first three innings including six runs in the third inning to break the game open.
Timothy Carter (So./Lumberton, NC) led the Falcons with three RBIs and Corey Brassington (So./Raleigh, NC) added two RBIs in the first game. The trio of Roberto Rivera (Fr./Millville, NJ), Tyson McDonald (Jr./Magee, MS) and Joshua Bumgardner (Fr./Durham, NC) each had two hits, and Jason Baytop (Jr./Manchester, MD) and Darrell Langston (Fr./Chicago, IL) each scored two runs.
Bryan Rivera (Sr./Cidra, Puerto Rico) scattered seven hits in seven complete innings for the pitching victory. He improved to 4-2 after recording six strikeouts and one walk.
The Hawks (14-16 overall) scored one run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. CIAA batting leader Aaron Flanagan scored Tanner Woods on a single.
The Falcons (13-16 overall) responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. McDonald scored Roberto Rivera on a single, and Alexis Garcia (So./Maracaibo, Venezuela) scored Sterling James (Sr./New Castle, DE) on a double. Bumgardner scored McDonald on a single.
The Falcons added two runs in the second inning for a 5-1 lead. Langston smacked his first home run of the season over the left field wall, and Carter scored Baytop on a groundout.
The Falcons tacked on six more runs in the third inning. Brassington scored Garcia and Bumgardner on a two-run double, and Baytop scored Brassington on a fielder's choice. Carter scored Langston and Baytop on a two-run triple, and Carter later scored on a passed ball.
The Hawks scored one run in the fourth inning for the final score. Flanagan scored Woods on a double.
In the second game, the Falcons totaled 10 hits. Baytop was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Roberto Rivera was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Carter finished with two RBIs. Darryl Washington-Hardy (Sr./River Grove, IL) scored three runs.
Desmond Cheek (So./Franklinville, NC) earned the pitching win after allowing seven hits and three earned runs in 6.1 innings. He improved his pitching record to 4-4.
Jeremy Sandifer (Sr./Virginia Beach, VA) earned the save after striking out two batters in the seventh and final inning to raise his CIAA-leading strikeout total to 52.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Falcons scored three runs in the second inning to go ahead 3-2. Baytop scored Brassington and Washington-Hardy on a two-run double, and Langston stole home.
The Hawks scored one run in the third inning, but the Falcons added two runs in the fourth inning for a 5-3 lead. Carter scored Washington-Hardy and Baytop on a two-run single.
The lead stretched to 7-3 after the Falcons scored two runs in the sixth inning. Rivera scored Washington-Hardy and Baytop on a two-run single.
Led by Kyle Cross' two-RBI single, the Hawks scored three runs in the seventh inning to pull within 7-6. Sandifer ended any hopes of a comeback when he struck out a batter for the final out.
The Falcons will host Coker College in a non-conference nine-inning single game at the USA Baseball National Training Complex on Monday, April 6. The starting time is 5 p.m.
