Falcons Lose Two Close Games To West Liberty In Baseball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University lost two tightly-contested baseball games to West Liberty University at Lions Park on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016. The scores were 4-2 in the first game and 3-2 in the second game.

Both teams will play again Sunday, Feb. 21, at Lions Park. The first game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the second game at approximately 3 p.m. There is no charge and the public is invited to attend.

The first game was more of a slugfest while the second game was a pitchers' duel. Both teams combined for 17 hits in the first contest and six in the second.

In the first game, the Falcons led 2-1 on Cameron Lopez's RBI single in the fifth inning which scored Mikal Batts (Jr./Kinston, NC), but a disputed call in the sixth inning sparked a three-run rally for the Hilltoppers. Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) appeared to make a diving catch, but the umpire ruled no catch was made and the West Liberty leadoff batter was credited with a triple.

Batts was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored for the Falcons. Timothy Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC) and Lopez each had an RBI, and Cheek scored a run for the Falcons. Jordan Meyer was 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored for the Hilltoppers.

In the second game, the Falcons (0-7 overall) took a 2-0 lead on Carter's two-run double which scored William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA) and Cheek in the first inning. The Hilltoppers (2-0 overall) scored a run in the third and sixth innings to send the contest into extra innings, and they won with a run in the eighth inning.

The starting pitchers for both teams were impressive. Carter allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking five in eight innings in the pitching loss. Greg Stagani stuck out 12, walked one and gave up three hits in eight innings for the win. Ethan Estes drove in two of the Hilltoppers' three runs.
