Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. – William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, PA) was 5-for-6 at the plate and drove in four runs for Saint Augustine's University, but the Falcons lost twice to the University of Virginia-Wise in a baseball doubleheader at Lions Park on Monday, Feb. 29, 2016. The score was 7-6 in the first game and 6-4 in the second game.

FIRST GAME

Thomas batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored in the first game. His two-run double pulled the Falcons within 7-6 after they entered the seventh inning behind 7-2. He represented the tying run on second base but the Falcons grounded out to end the contest.

Thomas scored the Falcons' first run in the second inning to tie the game when Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) hit an RBI groundout. The Falcons took their only lead at 2-1 in the same inning when Ricky Martin (Sr./Raleigh, NC) scored on a single by Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL). UVa.-Wise scored one run each in innings three through six for a 5-2 lead.

The Cavaliers added two runs in the seventh inning before the Falcons nearly came back. In the bottom of the seventh, Brassington scored on a wild pitch and Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) singled in Keywan Morgan (Fr./LaGrange, NC) to trim the margin to 7-4. Thomas added his two-RBI double which scored Cheek and Hector Pichardo (Jr./Dominican Republic). The Falcons needed one more RBI hit, however, to send the contest into extra innings.

Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) took the pitching loss after scattering seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven, walked five and allowed three earned runs. The Falcons finished with seven hits and the Cavaliers had eight hits including three home runs.

SECOND GAME

Thomas was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs including a home run and a double for the Falcons, who suffered another close loss to the Cavaliers. Cheek was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run one scored.

The Cavaliers belted a three-run homer in the top of the first inning, but the Falcons came back with two runs in the bottom half. Johnathan Garcia scored Cheek on an RBI single and Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly by Martin.

The Cavaliers added a run to lead 4-2 in the second inning, but Thomas tied the score in the third inning with a two-run shot over the left field fence which also scored Cameron Lopez. The Cavaliers took the lead for good at 6-4 in the sixth inning.

The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the seventh with men on first and second base with two outs. Lopez was hit by a pitch and Cheek singled up the middle. The Cavaliers forced a groundout, however, to end the contest.

Pichardo was the losing pitcher despite recording seven strikeouts with no walks and scattering eight hits in seven full innings. The Falcons totaled six hits in the second game.

The Falcons will host their third doubleheader in three days on Tuesday, March 1, when they take on Pfeiffer University at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. The starting times are 1 p.m. for the first game and approximately 3 p.m. for the second game.
