Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) went 5-for-7 at the plate for Saint Augustine's University, but the Falcons lost twice to Benedict College at Lions Park on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016. The scores were 3-2 in the first game and 6-2 in the second game.
Cheek went 3-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-3 with one run scored in the second game. Alexis Garcia (Jr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one stolen base in the first game for the Falcons.
Garcia scored the first run in the opening game when Cameron Lopez singled to center field in the fourth inning. The lead held until the fifth inning when Benedict (4-1 overall) scored three runs. Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning when he scored on a wild pitch.
The Falcons threatened to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the seventh. Cheek's single advanced pinch runner Charles Lyons (Jr./Rockingham, NC) to third base with one out, but Benedict managed to get the final two outs. Tim Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC) flied out to end the game when the Benedict left fielder made a diving catch.
Falcons' pitcher Marquis Johnson (Soph./Richmond, VA) was solid on the mound despite the loss. He threw a four-hitter in seven complete innings with five strikeouts and one walk. He had a no-hitter through four innings before allowing a hit in the fifth.
In the second game, the Falcons scored twice in the fourth inning to cut into a 3-0 deficit. Jonathan Sierra scored on a balk and Cheek scored on a sacrifice fly by William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, PA). Benedict scored the final three runs including two on a fifth-inning home run.
The Falcons (0-4 overall) play again Wednesday, Feb. 10, when they visit Coker College in a single nine-inning game in Hartsville, S.C. The first pitch is 2 p.m.
