Carter Pitches Shutout As Falcons Sweep Lincoln (Pa.) In Baseball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Timothy Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC) hurled a shutout in the first game and Saint Augustine's University totaled 10 hits in the second game of a 4-0 and 10-4 baseball doubleheader sweep of Lincoln (Pa.) University at Lions Park on Saturday, March 12, 2016. The Falcons extended their win streak to three games with the victories.

 

The Falcons began the CIAA portion of their schedule atop the conference standings at 2-0. Both teams will resume action Sunday, March 13, with a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Lions Park to beat expected incoming inclement weather.

 

FIRST GAME

Carter picked up his first pitching win of the season after limiting the Lions to three hits in seven complete innings. He struck out a career-high nine batters and walked one for the victory.

 

Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) paced the Falcons with two RBIs and one run scored on 2-for-3 hitting including two doubles. Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Ricky Martin (Sr./Raleigh, NC) each knocked in a run and Alexis Garcia (Jr./Maracaibo, Venezuela) was 2-for-2 with one run scored for the Falcons, who tallied eight hits.

 

The Falcons scored in the first inning on Langston's RBI double which scored William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA). They added a run for a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Cheek's sacrifice fly which scored Hector Pichardo (Fr./Dominican Republic).

 

The lead stretched to 4-0 in the fifth inning. Garcia scored on Langston's RBI double after Garcia reached base on a double. Langston scored on Martin's sacrifice fly.

 

Joshua Roberson was 2-for-3 for the Lions. Marcos Castillo was the losing pitcher after allowing seven hits and four earned runs in four innings.

 

SECOND GAME

The Falcons scored five runs in the fifth inning to break open a tight contest. They tacked on one run in the sixth for the final score.

 

Thomas finished with two RBIs and one run scored on 3-for-4 hitting. Cheek had one RBI and three runs scored on 2-for-3 hitting including two doubles, and Pichardo and Martin each collected two RBIs.

 

The Lions scored three runs in the top of the fourth for a 4-3 lead, but the Falcons tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Langston scored on Pichardo's fielder's choice. The Falcons exploded in the fifth inning to gain control of the game.

 

Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) started the scoring in the fifth on a Lincoln error. Cheek's RBI double scored Cameron Lopez (Fr./Vineland, NJ)  and Cheek scored on Thomas' RBI single. Thomas scored on Garcia's RBI single and Pichardo scored Garcia on a sacrifice fly for a 9-4 lead in the fifth. Thomas capped the scoring for the Falcons in the sixth inning when he singled in Cheek.

 

The Falcons scored once in the first inning and twice in the second for an early 3-0 lead. Cheek scored in the first inning on a wild pitch and Martin drove in Langston and Johnathan Sierra (So./Raleigh, NC) on a two-run single.

 

Marquis Johnson (So./Richmond, VA) of the Falcons was the winning pitcher. He scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs in seven complete innings. The Falcons' hurdler recorded six strikeouts and three walks.

 

Ronald Lashley and Aiden Gomes each had two RBIs for the Lions. DeVante Parker was the losing pitcher after giving up eight hits and six earned runs in four innings.
