First Day Results
RALEIGH, N.C. – All-American long jumper Shakinah Brooks (Jr./Raleigh, NC) and the Men's 1600 Sprint Medley Team of Saint Augustine's University were victorious on the first day of the Raleigh Relays outdoor track and field meet at Paul Derr Track on Friday, March 25, 2016.
Brooks leaped 20-2¼ on her final jump to finish ahead of Alexis Perry of N.C. State University, who was second with a leap of 19-11¾. The Falcons' sprint medley squad of All-Americans Daniel Jamieson (Sr./Windsor, CT), Burkheart Ellis, Jr. (Sr./Raleigh, NC), Shaquille Dill (Fr./Pembroke, Bermuda) and Immanuel Hutchinson (Sr./San Jacinto, CA) outran Hampton University in 3:18.52, not far off the meet and facility record of 3:17.86. Hampton was second in 3:22.37.
Brooks and the men's sprint medley foursome were among several Falcons and Lady Falcons who stood out Friday. All-American Tia-Adana Belle (Jr./St. George, Barbados) won her heat in the women's 100-meter hurdles (13.47) to reach Saturday's finals. Her time was the second-fastest in Friday's preliminaries.
Shawn Rowe (Jr./West Palm Beach, FL) qualified for Saturday's men's 110-meter hurdles finals with the fourth-fastest preliminary time (14.07). Jumonne Exeter (So./St. Vincent) finished second in the men's long jump with a leap of 23-2½.
Ade Hunter (So./Philadelphia, PA) won her heat and placed 12th overall in the women's 400-meter dash (55.97). Brent Arceneaux captured his heat and finished 15th overall in the men's 100-meter dash preliminaries (10.54).
David Shaw (Sr./St. Pauls, NC) placed eighth in the men's long jump Invitational (23-7½). Shamia Lassiter (Sr./Chesapeake, VA) ran the ninth-fastest prelim time in the women's 100-meter hurdles (13.95).
Several former Falcons also performed well. DeJon Wilkinson placed third in the men's long jump Invitational (24-7¼) and Josh Edmonds was third in the men's 400-meter dash (46.47).
Wilkinson and Edmonds are members of the G.W. Express/Nike team as well as Johnny Dutch, who won the men's 400 dash (46.34), and Jeffrey Gibson, who placed fifth in the event (47.00). Dutch and Gibson both competed in the 2015 IAAF Outdoor World Championships in the 400-meter hurdles with Gibson winning a bronze medal for third place. Yanique Haye-Smith of G.W. Express/Nike was the winner in the women's 400-meter dash (54.22) at the Raleigh Relays.
Legendary Head Coach George Williams of Saint Augustine's University is also the G.W. Express/Nike coach. He has won the most NCAA track and field championships (37) of any coach, regardless of division.
The Raleigh Relays will continue Saturday, March 26, beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free. Below is the list of Falcons and Lady Falcons competing in events.
