Falcons Rally To Win Game Two of Baseball Doubleheader Against Bluefield State

PRINCETON, W.Va. – Saint Augustine's University scored seven runs in the fifth inning to rally from a five-run deficit in an 8-6 victory over Bluefield State College in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Hunnicutt Field on Saturday, March 26, 2016. The Falcons lost the first game 5-2.

The Falcons collected five of their 10 hits in the fifth inning to come back from the huge deficit. Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) started the rally with a single to score Johnathan Sierra (Fr./Raleigh, NC). Ricky Martin (Sr./Raleigh, NC) added a single to score Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) and Mikal Batts (Jr./Kinston, NC) smacked a single to score Langston.

Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) tied the score 6-6 on a two-run single to score Batts and Martin. The Falcons took the lead on an infield error which scored Corey Brassington and Tim Carter (Jr./Lumberton, NC).

Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) held Bluefield State scoreless in the final six innings to preserve the victory. He scattered six hits in seven complete innings for his second pitching win of the season.

Corey Brassington, named CIAA Offensive Player of the Week, led the Falcons on 2-for-3 hitting with two RBIs and one run scored. William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA) was 2-for-4 with a double and Carter hit a triple and scored two runs for the Falcons (8-23 overall). Hector Pichardo (Fr./Dominican Republic) hit an RBI single in the second inning to score Carter.

Boston New had two RBIs for Bluefield State (7-19 overall), which scored all six runs in the first inning. Bowman Williams took the pitching loss after pitching the final two and two-third innings.

In the first game, the Falcons scored two runs in the third inning to trim a 3-0 deficit, but Bluefield State scored one run in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning for the final margin.

Cheek sparked the Falcons offensively on 3-for-3 hitting with one RBI. His single in the third inning scored Joshua Bumgardner (So./Durham, NC) for the Falcons' first run. Sierra scored later in the inning on a Thomas RBI groundout.

Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) was the losing pitcher despite scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs in six innings. The Falcons committed two errors in the contest. Jacob Muncy of Bluefield State was the winning pitcher after scattering six hits in seven innings.

The Falcons will visit CIAA foe Chowan University in a four-game series in Murfreesboro, N.C., next weekend. The starting times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3.
