Falcons Face Winston-Salem State In Weekend Baseball Series In Asheboro, N.C. (April 16-17)

Saint Augustine's University will conclude the regular season with a four-game baseball weekend series against CIAA foe Winston-Salem State University at McCrary Park in Asheboro, N.C., on Saturday, April 16, and Sunday, April 17. Game times are 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. both days.

The Falcons, currently third at 7-5 in the CIAA standings, can climb to second place with a successful weekend against the Rams, who are second at 5-3. Chowan University is the conference leader at 12-4, Virginia State University is fourth at 3-9 and Lincoln (Pa.) University is fifth at 1-7. The top four teams qualify for the CIAA Tournament, which will be held April 28-30 in Cary, N.C.

The Falcons are bolstered by a talented pitching staff, which ranks second in the CIAA in earned run average (4.55). CIAA Pitcher of the Week Corey Brassington (Jr./Raleigh, NC) ranks second in the conference with a 3.33 ERA and Marquis Johnson (Jr./Richmond, VA) is fourth with a 3.76 ERA. Sean Brassington (Sr./Raleigh, NC) is fifth with a 3.86 ERA. Johnson also ranks third in the league in strikeouts (49) and is tied for second in wins (4).

Darrell Langston (So./Chicago, IL) paces the Falcons offensively. He ranks seventh in the CIAA in batting average (.345) and Carey Cheek (Sr./Baltimore, MD) is ninth (.331). CIAA Defensive Player of the Week William Thomas (Sr./Yorktown, VA) ranks 10th in batting average (.322). CIAA Offensive Player of the Week Tyquan Bryant (Fr./Henderson, NC) ranks third in stolen bases (15) and Cheek ranks fifth (12) for the Falcons (12-27 overall).

Nathan Steger is the top player for the Rams (19-18 overall), the five-time defending CIAA champions. He leads the conference in ERA (2.96) and is tied for the league lead in home runs (5). Steger also ranks fourth in batting average (.354) and strikeouts (44) for the Rams, who lead the CIAA in earned run average (4.37).

The Rams' Jason Baytop leads the CIAA in stolen bases (18). He played the last three seasons for the Falcons, where he was an All-CIAA, All-Region and CIAA Rookie of the Year performer.
